  1. I think I've asked this or very similar question some time ago.

However, I truly never had a satisfying answer. How does one get published?

Specifically in the bridal magazines. W

What struck me is that I've been contacted by one magazine for advertising. I

asked them what are the basis for being chosen as a featured wedding

photographer and getting a spread. His answer? When I buy a full page add.

So, I knew this is how many magazines (and I'm only talking about the bridal

magazines) are doing this. Another way is to have the couple inquire to have

    their wedding featured.

Is this the only way this works?

  2. Am I the only one having not so good experience with Graphi? both quality and definitely customer service wise?

It's a long story and I might have just had bad luck with the sample as well as my representative. However, the turnaround time for album ordered was pretty quick and so far the quality o very good. I did give them the benefit of doubt and went to order my studio sample, and it really is an excellent quality album - prints look awesome.

Anne, I know you are fond of Asukabook and so am I and I'm extremely happy with their service and unfortunately Graphi does not come close as far as customer care (this is ONLY my own experience and I haven't heard anybody else having any of the same sort). If you're interested I can explain quality problems I had with my sample but I hesitate to give a company "bad name" solely on one bad experience.

  3. I have winklet template and I'm pretty happy with it. Done it quick. I'm in the process of updating it and getting to be "nicer". I'm happy with the template and the cost! Simple and clean. However, if you want to personalize it... it takes A LOT of time and work to do so. I don't hate HTML but I don't know it and this is very easy to figure out.

Do what works for you the best. If you have a lot of time and patience get a template. It's fun. It's frustrating. But you'll get everything the way you want it (I've just spent 3h updating the color scheme and one gallery ONLY! and in my break checking the forum). There are also limitations to a template. Choose wisely.

  4. Thank you guys. I agree that some images are just to be in B&W but couples often ask since it's digital why can't they have both, etc.

I would love for them to be satisfied but think that b&w, then sepia, other effect copies are just too much!

I've seen some people offering 2 or 3 CDs with all copies in b&w or sepia etc.... a lot of work, a lot of pictures to go through for the couple - just too complicated.

    Again, thanks for your input!

  5. Do you provide the couple with both color version and b&w version of the picture

    or just one of them?

In your opinion what are the pros and cons for doing both copies of same picture

    or just either?

What is your experience with it?

  6. Yes, I was thinking to get one of those hand held spot lights to play around with but I was worried about the diffusion.

Since it's not dedicated light but a hand held deer light any diffusion would be "home-made" and might look unprofessional if I choose to use it during a wedding.

    Any suggestions?

  7. Nothing really out of ordinary except one wedding where everybody was drinking like there's no tomorrow and the father of the bride got so drunk he could not walk to sit down for the ceremony and an older aunt was throwing up in the bathroom sink just as I walked to the bathroom. No I did not take picture of that but they wanted me to shoot the father who was barley conscious all the time.

Except for the bride they all barley walked out of the reception (it was a short one as well)

  8. Nothing wrong with one glass of wine or a beer. If you feel you need it. I've had a glass of wine on occasion at the end of the night. I would not drink during the course of work but that's just my preference.

If a good photographer had 3 or even 10 glasses of whatever but delivered outstanding work and was able to maintain posture I bet nobody would ever care about the consumption -never heard of one though. However, it can ruin your reputation; a band couple of weeks ago was heavily drinking. By the end of the night, the girl had to sing from play back because she was hardly standing. Announced cake cutting AFTER the couple just did it! Walked around with a mini skirt so far up you could see her butt. The bride was pissed and I don't blame her.

I get often offered and never had any problems with declining politely.

  9. I like both. One is "top quality" album (graphi), another is just cool (not top since it does not cost a fortune). However, I've had some bad experience with graphi's customer service and slight problem with their sample... Asukabook has awesome customer service and their books are way cool (only minus is that the pages are magazine thin). Graphi also offers a lot of cover options and pages are thick and unbendable.

    I am currently offering both.

  10. When I first learned about the business I was "warned" to wear something that would cover everything up, a black suit with black shirt. I did that for a long time although I was never comfortable. I think that anything that is dressy, comfortable and looks nice is fine. On hot days I try to wear darker pants with lighter shirt, dressy type shirt. I try to look not as a catering waitress but rather blend in with "sophistication" into the crowd. There's really no rule of thumb although many will say there is. I've worked with quiet few photographers and seen very different approaches to dressing for the occasion. My belief now is, as long it is appropriate and makes you and everybody else comfortable go ahead and wear it. However, I would never wear shorts (I did wear capris and white tee when shooting in mexico).
  11. I recently shot a wedding where the uncle was a serious amateur. He actually had the same camera and a better flash to be exact. He shot along me, and did his own thing. We briefly spoke about photography (he told me his story that he used to have darkroom in his house and was into photography longer than I live). He was a nice guy, and I thought to myself if he gets some great photos, good! They'll have more memories. I thought of worry and intimidation did pass through my head (after all he is was doing photography since the 60's!). But he was nice and did step aside when I asked him kindly during the cake cutting, not that I did not want him to shoot but I needed the "main" spot. To make long story short; I've seen his photos and while they're nice, the whole does not compare to what I did.

This is a little off topic, but being a professional photographer you need to have confidence in yourself (or at least show that you do when in slight doubt I'm sure every one is once in a while) that you're the MAIN photographer at the same time let others have "their share" in the fun.

  12. Ok, I know this has been asked many, many times. However, I'm looking for a

presentation I can do quickly. I don't need anything fancy. It is not for

customer however I will need to run it on TV rather than PC. Is there something

out there that can do this fairly simple slideshow? I've got Nero and know that

this might be done through it but can't seem to either know it or don't have the

version that burning slideshows is possible. Can anybody help?

This is for quick presentation I need to have for tomorrow!

    Thank you!

  13. Emin,

I've seen your work before. Knew you were from NY (seen you advertise on CL). I think your work is awesome and you have a great style! That said, I'm in NY as well, I know how it is with competition here and pricing. I hope that 3597 is indeed a typo, though, that's way too much!

Now as far as pricing. I think you're worth more. However, a lot depends on your "presentation" as a professional photographer. A website- first off. Quality albums- second. Portfolio of finished work to show clients when meeting. If you have all of the above you can certainly go and succeed in what you do and doubling what you charge now would be fair.

BTW. Some people and I from this forum are planning another meeting soon (we had one few months ago) if you wish to join us please contact me via E-mail (agucham@yahoo.com). It's a terrific way of meeting other people "in the same boat", share experiences, knowledge and resources.

  14. I have both, the Archival - 300 year CD and the regular printable versions. I would never put a label stick on CD, but I did wanted them to look "decent" so got the printable version. However, am I sacrificing "quality" for the sheer looks of CD?

Btw. What do you write on the Archival - "ugly looking" CDs, if anything.
