  1. I am battling to get consistent results shooting with a studio flash

and my on-camera flash as a fill flash.

What I am wondering is how does the camera use TTL metering when

using the sync flash position (X) on the command dial.

I am using an EOS 5, (which I understand is a type b body ? only TTL

and A-TTL) set on manual and a Sunpak auto 555 in manual mode. The

studio flash is an Elinchrom 200 connected with a sync cord to the

PC socket. I have dialled in -2 stops flash compensation on the

body, though I am not sure if this will do anything if the flash is

    in manual mode.

I have looked all over the site and the web, including the very

comprehensive article by NK Guy on photonotes.com and can?t get an

answer but apologies in advance if I missed a thread somewhere.

Any help / advice will be great

    Thanks

  2. My 2 cents (or 1/2 cents in this case).

Maybe all the underexposure is Canon being conservative in avoiding overexposure. In my very limited exposure (sic) to digital I have seen how fatal blown out highlights are, while I can always recover something acceptable from the dark areas of the image.

I will be following this thread with interest as a 580 is also on my shopping list

  3. I am trying to remember which types of film are more sensitive to

over and under exposing. I know that if you overexpose digital, the

highlights get blown out rapidly and you can't get back any detail

in photoshop but there is recoverable detail in the shadow areas of

    an underexposed frame.

I can remember (I think) that different types of film had similar

charecteristics. For instance, if you underexpose B&W film you can

still over-develop it and get the highlights.

What about colour print and slide film?

Thanks for the help I am sure I will get.

  4. Thanks for all the replies!

first one correction - it is a 1 Gig disk.

I bought it in 2003 and it does not have 2x or 4x or anything like that on the disk. On the back there is SDCFB and the patent no.

Software is Windows XP SP2 and I copy the images using the Windows copy and paste function.

Also, downloading the same amount of images (e.g. 75Mb) from one of my 128 Mb cards is much faster.

Thanks for the interest so far

  5. I just bought a Manfrotto 055 Pro and when I unpacked it found that

it has a plastic QR mount. I then read on the board that some people

have had problems with them. Is this a serious shortcoming or am I

just being over-cautious? if this is a problem, does anyone know of

    a solution or a workaround?

Secondly, any recommendations which QR system I should buy? I am

shooting with 35mm and a 300mm lens but I may move up to medium

format at some time in the future. the RCO seems the most solid but

it may be a bit big for the 35mm. The the two square fittings, the

RC2 and RC4, seem a little less sturdy and don't have that

solid "thunk" when they click in.

    Any suggestions?

    Regards
