well, after 3 years of shooting digital, i just bartered my digital rebel for mamyia 645af. i got tired of plasticy feel of digital, blown highlights and unnaturaly sharpening of details. also, i always gravitate toward black and white, and digital is really not there yet. so i shoot mamyia and my old good elan IIe again, and i don't miss digital even one bit.
funny thing, elan IIe remembers my eye settings even after 2 years of gathering dust. this is kinda touching :)
the view in viewfinder alone is worth switching to MF.

i use sigma ettl ring flash em-140 dg for both macro photography and shooting social gathering, works quite well.

most automatic flashes actually work better then dedicated ettl flashes in my experience, but make sure to check the voltage - it may damage your camera. i use vivtar 2800 and sunpak 5000 with my drebel.

i have Sigma EM-140 with ny dRebel. its guide number is only 14, and as all e-ttl flashes, it often underexposes, but fortunately it has FEC buttons on flash, so it can be easily corrected. all in all, not a bad flash for $300.

quite honestly, even home depot worklights would be better and easier to work with. or this dirt cheap monolight kit for $135:

i would use custom white balance in this case, set without a fill flash.

if you're doing realistic paintings, the focal length is very important - 50mm gives you the eye perspective, and any deviation of this looks unnatural and has this typical amateurish 'painted from a photo' look. so if you don't find a fixed focal lenght camera with 50mm equivalent length, you may be better off with zoom.
