the composition and colors are great, but the photoshopping looks awful, to be honest. It's fairly obvious this is a composite image, and the filter you used looks pretty bad.
Sorry if that's harsh sounding. I mean it to be constructive... and i'm in a bad mood.

that's a great looking sky, and a clever method. nice use of dodging to highlight the dog's head. great image!

it would be much improved with about 20 seconds i n photoshop. adjust the levels so you have a pure black and a pure white, and possibly bump up the saturation a tiny bit... maybe not.
mainly, the problem is it's just too flat, but that could certainly be corrected.
i've attached a copy that i basically just did auto levels and contrast and adjusted the hue and saturation slightly.

Playing around with lights. Would appreciate some advice, as this is
really my first time doing much with a studio set up
