    I would have to say it's exactly the opposite. It's the common ins-and-outs of the daily grind that attract me to street, as much as I can manage it here in the Ozarks. The recording of the everyday world I deal with, constantly, and the myriad of opportunities that stage presents.

  2. I'm with Johnson on this one. I interact as little as possible, though I do not slink around like I have something to hide. I do make eye contact. I do work quickly. If it's a candid, you'll never see me coming until it's too late. If I want to have a personal connection, I'll walk right up and engage, direct, etc.

    <p />

    Very few "problems" in 4 years. Gets easier every time.

  3. I carry 3 speedlights: a single SB25, and two SB26 units. The 25 is pretty much my main light, using the SB26s as needed for backlights or other slaved application. Only used a single for the stuff above. I hold the SB25 in my hand, sometimes mount it on a monopod. It's tethered to the camera via a synch-cord. This allows me to have great control over the light, much better than shooting on-camera flash, be that pop-up or in the shoe. There are times when shoe-mount is the way to go. But, if I can work with the flash in hand, I will go that route.

    Thank you for the comment, Barry.

  4. One other item, learned this weekend, was how to get more bang out of my D70s. The output at high ISO (640 or better) in low-light conditions was terrible. Made me hate the D70s and turn to the F4s with TMZ time and again. Trouble being, I like color, and I don't like to use B&W when I really want color output.

    <p>

    I went out for a bit on Thursday, late, and shot some concert stuff from the pit. The first shots were, as anticipated, quite bad. Frustrated, I dialed in close to a stop in + compensation, and there it was. Why I didn't think to do this before, I'll never know. At any rate, my opinion of the D70s for such work has changed. Images included.

  5. Getting my light where I want it at night, thus improving my ability to shoot where even TMZ pushed to Hell and back would do me no good. Progressing to the point that I can shoot full-manual under those conditions. Working on my directional lighting (flash in hand or on a monopod verses shot on-camera), and putting what I want in the frame, instead of shooting wide, cropping, etc., or being more concerned with "the rules" of composition. Other minor issues.
  6. Bikes, Blues, & BBQ took place this past week/end, 10-3 thru 10-6. It's been my

    yearly thrill-ride for the last 4 years, a perfect storm of machines, people,

    colors, action, etc., to cut my teeth on. This year, I shot very little, and

    still not sure why. I think... I think it's because I've conquered some

    technical challenges that previously had me hungry for opportunities to shoot,

    especially the last two years. Still love my camera and photography, so, lack of

    hots for one specific event doesn't bother me.<p>

    At any rate, I took it easy, relaxed, enjoyed people-watching, be it

    bike-related or market folk. A few nice captures in the bunch, including Jesse

    from West Coast Choppers. I think the big kid with the "God created Harley"

    might be the pick of the litter.<p>

    All Nikon D70s. Various lenses: Tamron 28-75 f/2.8, Nikkor AF IF-ED 18-35, and

    the Nikkor AF-D 80-200mm f/2.8<p>

  7. And I do not wish to be rude in any way, shape, or form.... but letters to the consulate, letters to government heads, etc., are worth fuck-all. Especially to the Chinese. How many thousands were at Tiannamen? How much change? How many thousands have assembled in Washington, DC over Iraq? How much difference has it made? How many millions of letters have been dumped over mailservers the world wide? How much justice?

    A Klack for all my friends. All the ammo you need. Work it out.

  8. Leslie - to clarify, my point about chances being slim was with regards to a popular uprising of such magnitude that the junta should be overthrown.

    Historically, people tend to suffer terrible abuses for years... decades, generations, before they even begin to consider such tactics. Even then, and as we see across the globe--indeed, even our own, modern US history gives ample evidence--actions by those most vocal and resolved tend to end in disaster, with little hard support from those the dissenters are seeking to emancipate, and the heads of such movements being decapitated by the abusers.

    In the US, labor unions broken, partly due to internal corruption and political squabbles, partly to anti-labor activities on the part of corporations and their government allies. The Civil Rights movement was effectively forced to accept less than complete victory. Mouthpieces shot dead, remnants scattered or placated with undeserved political clout; those most in need of true civil rights progress left starving in their underdeveloped inner-city ghettos and rural slums, killing each other with drugs and related, territorial feuding. The last great hurrah of Liberal Student Activism was stomped bloody beneath Daly's boots in 1968. Now privileged college kids talk about rights, talk about freedom, talk about justice, but only as far as they can without getting their asses whipped in large numbers. Safer to make a career out of it, transform it into a 40 yr life of do-gooding and activism, comfortable living in the burbs, while the people they claim to care about continue living and dying in the same cesspools.

    Who is to blame? Ultimately those who most need the help. They refuse to acknowledge their potential for change, as individuals, as a unit, and any who feign coming to their aid only do so because there is a benefit to be had, whether that benefit is tangible good or political reinforcement for "looking out for the little guy". The little guy needs to grit his teeth and aim true. Simple as that. Makes no difference if we're talking about the Burmese, or the working poor wherever they be.

    This is not my way of saying the dead deserve their lot. No. I regret, tremendously, that the Burmese are getting the ass-wipping they're taking now, and before. But the UN, US, Santa Claus and his reindeer to boot cannot right the wrong. Delay it, perhaps. Fix it... no.

  9. Make the image and move along. There is no need to engage in a "you can/oh yes I can" argument with any, least of all a pumpkin farmer.

    <p>

    <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/34432914@N00/1424901369/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1143/1424901369_0e4812e581.jpg" width="500" height="500" alt="Shout LuLu" /></a>

    <p>

    I frequent the local FM several times a month, during season, and I have no problems with vendors or visitors. Look people in the eye if they engage you, smile, grab your shot, move along. Worst case: point at your camera and stammer in a mock accent, "Toowrist", grin goofily, and walk.

    <p>

    This feller was surly and didn't want his photo taken. Took it any way, went about my business.<p>

    It ain't black magick, after all. It's not even remotely difficult to pull off. The trouble, as I experienced it early on, was in relaxing, and working with confidence. Get out there, do it again and again. Have fun.

  11. Brad, looking forward to a response re: my last e=mail query. A minor edit to that e-mail request, I might suggest an 8x10 version of your book would be a wonderful thing to behold. I would certainly pay you for the trouble of constructing one. As stated in my email, name your price.

    <p>

    There are others here whose work I would love to own in book form and/or print. I am not a rich man, not even middle-class, but I prefer to spend fun-money I have on worthy persons and items.

    Echoing Pete: very inspiring thing you have done.
