  1. Jim,

Thank You so much for commenting.

I must say that I have read your homepage bio- and, I promise not to hold it against you...;)

I am happy to respond to your criticism however.

"OUCH.... whatever you did to the colors in PS really was overdone."

I dissagree. Contrary to what the many do, Colour can be used for drama just as Black and White images have been manipulated thusly for a hundred years.

"Compositionally weak. Everyone is turned away, background (esp the car) is very distracting."

This statement, I'm afraid, is just wrong.

    ..........Main Entry: com?po?si?tion

    Pronunciation: "k䭭p&-'zi-sh&n

    Function: noun

Etymology: Middle English composicioun, from Middle French composition, from Latin composition-, compositio, from componere

1 a : the act or process of composing; specifically : arrangement into specific proportion or relation and especially into artistic form. ..............

The composion is deliberate and as you can see; it is the backs of this moment. The backs of people, the backs of bikes, the backside of a house, of a line of trees and of the car that MAKES the image. It ties the two sides of the image together. You may not LIKE the composition but the composition is quite strong.

Again, Thank you for your comment.

  2. Scott,

    Hello again.

Hopefully to answere your question; "Art is Subjective". If we agree that art is subjective then what you bring to the image is just as important as the image, for Your understanding of any work. I could just as well have said, "The yellow tones are what tie this together...", or whatever. I choose with some images not to put forth my own interpretations so that I might see what others see without me telling them what they should see....see?

    ~Thank You Scott

Martin I have just found your work and I like it!

You obviously enjoy light!.....;) This one is in particular very striking. Dark but not too dark and all the shading is appealing to me. Bravo....J

  3. Jake and Samuel, Thank you so much for your kind words and criticisms. The bright whites however are there on purpose to highlight the drama of the moment. The stark contrasts between the innocent boy and the banners of war, between the ordinary and heroic, between words and emotion, between light and dark. Waiting for dad, yet wondering about what he has been doing....
  4. Irving,

Thank you sir, for taking on the challege of finding symbolism in the hydrant, and of course, the symbolism is relative to your perspective as you obviously know....sadly, you seem to be in the minority.

Lack of investment is a good answere.

For me and my sentiments when creating this piece I am still thinking of the past, present and future of my beloved country, the United States of America. The fire hydrant represents security. (Insurance writers love them close to your house - and you would like it as well if there was a fire around you and yours!) The Security in the USA (Patriot Act) has become shades of grey, has become surreal, has incongruously effected art, literature, film, and us as a people by means of unnatural juxtapositions and combinations. This at least, is the sybolism for me........Thank You again Irving...;)....J

Outstanding water shot. I have actually thought of this composition but have yet to shoot it, but I really don't know that I could do better.

    I rate this a 6/7 very rare for me....;).....J

Thank you Doug, Eric, David, And I fought with myself over this image because

of the blackness but in the end I just let the image happen. Martino your being

reminded of Monet is indeed flattery I doubt I derserve, I am humbled.

Darko, my friend, anytime you wish to send me images feel free~ you can even

post them in this thread if you like. I hope that one day we will share a bottle

    and some stories...;)....Jay
