  1. chuckles, use whatever combination you want if it gives you the results you're seeking. worrying about how other photographers view you is to a certain degree wasted energy, because of the vastness of the medium, the wide latitude of different styles, thought processes involved, personal motivations of the photographer, snobbery, egoism, fashion-consumerism, pecking orders, people's need to differentiate themselves, etc...

    pants off,

  2. 'You shouldn't place moderators or moderator actions on public trial in the feedback forum. All moderators are different and work differently.'

i agree. moderators shouldn't be held to any sort of consistency or accountability, and any mechanism to that end should be quelled.

  3. the nannybot's decision was binary in nature, but subjective in affect. the bot sees zeroes and ones, but who programmed it to make such a decision? who created the set of rules which makes filtering out their pet peeves more important than, say, their grammatical errors in writing the terms of use, or profanity in the threads? the same guy that saw it fit to keep 'aperatures' out of p.net, posts tutorials sprinkled with profanity. i'm not trying to play pious, but it's hypocritical and political. ...i think that's an elvis costello song.
  4. after reading around, i bought a sunpak 355AF flash for $49 USD from B+H, which has full time TTL, bounce and manual zoom head, and a respectable guide number of 120' at DIN21/100 ISO. hama and other companies manufacture hotshoe slave adaptors which can be hooked up to this unit if you want to use the sunpak off-camera in conjunction with the onboard flash or on its own. these slave adaptors cost between 9 and 15 dollars.

    take a look here:

    www.sunpak.com

or, vivitar also makes decent flashes, including the very popular 283 which can be found on ebay for under 50 bucks:

    http://www.vivitar.com/Products/Flashes/flash.html

i'm not sure right offhand what the guide number is for the N80's onbaord flash, but i would venture a guess to say that it would be something in the realm of 40. this is just not going to cut the bacon in two ways. a) it's right next to the lens, and b) it just hasn't any muscle for much beyond daylight fill flash. with the abovementioned flash/adaptor combo (grand total: $60 USD), you can have most of the features and power as nikon units that cost 4 times as much (3d exposure metering aside, but as people like ken rockwell illustrate, the real usefulness of this feature is a debated one: http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/flash.htm ).

  5. this is all very helpful, including the weather forecast.

unfortunately, the yashica is in the US waiting for my arrival, so i can't test it out ahead of time; and because on a given day one can never tell if the "one carry on and a personal item" airline policy will be enforced, i am hesitant to take the N80 and risk having to check a soft-sided camera bag on the way back (i'd never get on with two lowepro nova 5's).

deep down i was somewhat hoping that the general concensus would overwhelmingly favor the 635... blast. looks like i might take the N80 with, and just ship the yashica to myself DHL/Deutsche Post.

    cheers to all...affen

  6. as loaded as it might be to post this in the MF forum, this question

is mainly for the yashica 635 users out there, and it has to do with

the yashikor 3 element 80mm lens. please excuse the exposition...

this coming week i'll be spending some time in what's left of

florida; and while there, i'd like to take some long overdue

portraits of the 'rents, whom i seldom get to see.

for this task, i can either use a nikon 50mm 1.8 on my N80, or a

newly purchased and CLA'd yashica 635 with the 3 element yashikor

    80mm.

possibly a strange question comparing apples to bullets, but i was

wondering which system would in the end offer better (read, sharper)

A4 enlargements? (aside: i'm shooting with technical pan and delta

100.) the 50mm 1.8 is so very sharp, but on a small format body.

the yashica offers 6x6 negs, but from what i've read, also is of

    lower quality.

will medium format always beat 35mm, or is the nikkor sharp enough,

and the yashikor soft enough, to level things out considerably?

could someone who has experience with the 635 (and preferably also

the 50mm nikkor), or who's first name is kelly or bob, please give a

comparison/recommendation between the two kits, or expound upon

personal experience with the 635's image quality? half of the

resources that i've read on the internet just make reference to the

fact that the 3 element yashikor is of lower quality than the 4

element yashinon, and the other half seem to be zealots that only

rate equipment in extremes (a lá epinions.com, where something

invariably either rates a 1/5 or a 5/5). can anyone offer some

    thoughts? thanks in advance. cheers...affen

  7. pete, you're forgetting something. p.net is not a democratic forum; it's a political microcosm with it's own societal structure, complete with caste system and religion. the bozo filter which has become your bane just helps to illustrate, that whereas we're playing in someone else's clubhouse, we all did agree implicitly to the terms of use beforehand:

"we reserve the right (but assume no obligation) to delete, move, or edit any postings that come to our attention that we consider unacceptable or inappropriate, of for any other other reasons, which we need not disclose, and which need not be reasonable."

i purposefully left in the original terms of use typo. where's waldo?

  8. it's a marketing thing. they want us to spread a prepanic amongst ourselves. better hurry though; there are only 7 months remaining until the official discontinuation goes into affect.

  9. no worries. you can only insult the intelligence of intelligent people. luckily, i do not fall into that demographic. really, i appreciate all the help i can scare up, in particular when it comes to all things flash.

as bob marley said: keep a dip in your hip and a glide in your stride. cheers...affen

  10. thanks jim. i appreciate you setting me 'straight' about the female to female slave thing. goes right along with this week's MF thread about leica-nipples for TLRs.

actually, the pic i posted is just a flash that i will attach to one of those hotshoe optical slave adaptors. i get these for peanuts from from ukraine. it really has nothing at all to do with my last question, and was just there so people could point at their monitors and say "look-uh there, that ain't english."

anyway, sorry for the confusion. really, i meant a) is it safe to hook a sunpak 355AF to a cheapo hotshoe optical slave adaptor (as jim described it), and if so b) will it actually fire, or will it be stuck waiting for some extra instructions that will never arrive (because it's not hooked to a nikon AF sending it all the info needed for it's full-time ttl functions)?

not as smart as heath robinson...affen

  11. so you have a 'plethora' of peanuts, as el guapo would say.

one last thing on slaves. i have a sunpak 355AF waiting for my when i visit the states later this month; it's nikon dedicated, has full time ttl, and no manual setting or jack for a sync cord. i can't use it as the master on my yashica tlr, but i was wondering if i would use it as a slave, when hooked up to one of these brand x optical shoe slaves. is this possible, or will it fry my virginal new flash unit? cheers...affen<div>009Nal-19483984.jpg.6226d92db8479acfc535cf9f28d3e6a7.jpg</div>

  12. thanks for the thoughts, guys. i ended up picking up a bunch of off-brand optical slaves, and a wein peanut - upon your recommendations - to ensure that the cluster trips at distances under 100'. my subject-to-camera distances are usually under 15', background distance under 50', so i'm optimistic.

thanks again for the sync cord ideas. i ordered that which i needed from a nice vietnamese lady in london.

this is why i contribute. cheers...affen

  13. and right you are. the 124 does almost universally take the standard cable release. i say almost because i've run across some hybrids on PeeBay, which consisted of a mixture of 124 parts (nameplate included) and the rest from other yashica tlr remnants. with the semantics of 'a rose by any other name' aside, some people who are new to tlr's such as myself could buy and have bought these, thinking fully that they have a 124 when in reality their little frankenstein has needs that a normal 124 does not. several real models of yashica tlr's though, including the 635 and the D, do require nipples.

    nipples...affen

  14. hi everyone. if one wanted to hook up a 'modern' pc sync cord (for

example, one that would fit a vivitar 283 or an older hammerhead) to

the flash sync socket on a yashica 635 tlr, would one need an

adaptor to do this, or were the male/female sync connectors for this

    type of camera compatible?

second question. i'm in the market for some basic optical slave

units to be used in fairly controlled conditions, and i was

wondering if there is a difference where functionality is concerned,

between wein peanuts, brand x optical slaves, brand y's and so on.

when the lights are out, are these brands equals, or is there a real

justification for spending twice as much for weins?

    thanks for your thoughts. cheers...affen.

  15. thanks, patric. while off buying my leica bell/nipple/whathaveyou just now - another nod for the information - i stumbled across some old posts about the cable release/adaptor rig obstructing the final shot somewhat due to it's jutting out like it does. additionally, other sites' threads mention the cable release on some tlr's as a 'dangerous territory,' because of its placement. so should i be weary of this?
  16. huh. on Weebay, i tried a couple of search queries, but for some reason the key search terms "monkey soup ladle" and "shiver me timbers" didn't bring up anything about tlr release adaptors.

    odd.

anyway, thanks a ton for pointing me in the right direction. that saved me - and hopefully others more adept than i at choosing query terms - some trouble.

    cheers...affen

  17. hi everyone. for an upcoming fine art project that i'm putting

together, i'm going to be jimmy-wiring together a decent amount of

old flash units for the purpose of creating some dirty lighting

affects on a beach scene in italy - the whole filthy mess being

tripped from a yashica tlr. the electronic flashes i've been

acquiring are basically going to be throwaways after it's all said

and done, after having been painted, partially disassembled, buried

in sand, etc. one of the flash units that i picked up on ebay for 2

pounds (brand new in box, which alludes to it's craftsmanship) was

a 'prisma 100m flashgun' shoemount unit, and i was wondering if

anyone knew where one would turn to get either more of this product,

or something similarly basic with a pc sync. thanks for the info.

    cheers...affen.
