1.
well, yes, i had a similar experience recently, downloaded a software from transcend site, and recovered most of the files, then transcend said i could return the 16 gig card for a replacement within a week or two, or have them send it to taipei taiwan to recover the rest (no charge) and they would put the images on a new card but it may take three or four months...not sure if it was an aperture or compact flash problem, or if the camera or computer shut down when the damage happened, or could the extreme heat we've been having been a problem, but was relieved to have recovered most of the images

 2.
While downloading my raw images from my 16G compact flash card to aperture, something went wrong. In aperture the last 300 images or so appear strange, a quarter of the square shows part of the image, the rest are brightly colored lines and streaks. I thought, okay, I'll just reimport them from the flashcard, however when I looked at the card contents, I was aghast to find no images at all. I have not reformatted or reused the card since this happened, and wonder if I can recover these images which are not visible when I try to look at the card. Is there a recevery software or method you would suggest? thanks, these are important images to me of a rare concert...Virginia

 3.
thanks, everyone, for caring and taking the time to answer, i've called schneider, and yes, this is just a single coated filter, with such an excellent new lens, i will get the multi-coated version, there was a mistake on the website of the place i got it from, and they are refunding some money, and correcting the website, thanks again, i'm glad i caught this, and to have your help...and do you all agree with brian about single vs multi-coated or you recognize differences? thanks, virginia sustarsic

 4.
It does not say MR or MRC, it just says Pro, so I guess we can assume it just has a single coating and is inferior to be used with this lens. Mike, that link is in another language, and I can not get it to translate to English...thanks, everyone, I guess I'll call Beach Camera and ask for my money back for the filter, Virginia

 5.
Just got a 70-200 2.8 canon is usm 2 lens from beach camera, who offered, for twenty more dollars a 'kit' including a B&W UV filter. The salesperson said, when I asked, that it was 'SPCMH, super multi-coated". But I've just received the lens and it doesn't say anywhere on it that it is super multicoated or have any initials that could indicate that. It says B+W and Pro on it in gold letters, and seems to look a little yellowish. I had asked, when I ordered, whether he could include a heliopan filter instead, and he said no, that is what I usually use and one from amazon is 150. The B+W is listed for around 79, but the salesperson said it is 'better than' heliopan. So how good is the filter I got, is it multicoated, and how would it compare to a heliopan? thanks, Virginia

 6.
Ted, thank you so much, this seems like the best thing to do. We are staying in a very small and inexpensive hotel that my daughter arranged in playa for the first few days, maybe it will be safe to ask there, or maybe I will go to a bigger hotel? Actually, my first time in the dominican republic I took an eco tour, which was a good experience and was able to make some excellent photographs, some of the places seemed somewhat cleaned up and staged to an extent, but the next time, I just hired a guide, and he took me to some remote places where folks invited us into their yards, homes, etc., and it was a good experience, the next time I went back to find my favorites of those places with a less expensive driver and that worked pretty well too, driving was dangerous in some areas, and the roads confusing, could have rented a car, but it was nice to have someone familiar with the area. So yes, I think I'll just arrange through a hotel for a driver/guide, that seems the safest and most likely to find what we're looking for...thanks again, Virginia

 7.
Ted, thank you for sharing your experience, sounds like the road between playa and tulum still has some genuine stuff on it and will be a good one, have you any experiences with the road from tulum to coba...and do you think any car would be fine, or would there be need to have a jeep? about how much would a rental car cost, what kind of insurance have you gotten with them, and where have you gotten them? arrange ahead of time, or just when you get to playa? Thank you for your suggestions, I agree being sensitive to the people and their culture is very important. Also, I thought I posted this in the mexico section but it looks like it is just in the general travel section, is there a way to move it? Thanks, Virginia

 8.
I saw there was an ecotour group that would take travelers to very small villages near coba, and wondering if anyone has any experienence with this. My main interest photographically is to see the simple dwellings, round stick huts with thatch roofs, and the ways the mayan people live there...wondering how to find them, do you know whether these places will be easy to find, whether to travel by bus, rent a car or jeep, or go with the tour, but thinking if they have 80 people coming through in a day, the tour may not be the way to go because the tourism may have had a pretty strong impact on these places, and they may be somewhat staged and cleaned up or dressed up to make them appear more presentable. I haven't been to mexico in decades and don't know what to expect, what would you suggest? by the way, will stay around playa del carmen a few days, and then isla mujeres a few days, unless plans change, time will be limited, will there be a map of this area with small villages showing on it, or just travel around the roads and see what appears? thanks, Virginia

 9.
planning to travel to isla mujeres, and wondering how far we would need to go from there to see small indigenous mayan settlements where the people are still living in the little round huts made with sticks, with thatch roofs, any thoughts, would also welcome thoughts on other places in and around isla...thanks for any suggestions, virginia

 10.
Am using a macbook and will be getting another external hard drive or two for storing photographic images, which i always keep on an external drive, and for backing up the computer itself. The current one i have is a kanguru desktop and has been fine. Now i am thinking about a 1 terrabyte, smaller portable one rather than a desktop, and wondering whether all external hard drives are pretty much equal or there are more dependable ones. Also, whether all are compatible with mac, and do they need to be formatted for mac, or just use as is? And, with apple now coming up with thunderbolt on all their new computers, when i eventually upgrade computers, will my hard drives be able to be used with thunderbolt technology, thanks for any suggestions, virginia

 11.
sutto, i have had similar problems with aperture, do you have the library on your computer and the images on an external hard drive as referenced images? i do and frequently have to reconnect mine, and sometimes actually import them again, other problems too, very frustrating as i now have some 35,000 images in my library...am thinking of going over to photoshop elements to keep my catalog as i don't recall having such problems when i used elements to catalog, and they now have a mac organizer...however, you may try aperture support forums online if you don't find a solution here

 12.
thanks for all the responses, john, the aperture seems to run really slow and often turns itself off unpredictably, although i have all my images stored on an external hard drive. i have about 40 thousand raw files in the catalog now...remember when i used elements some years ago, this did not happen, also i have found the elements easier to use and easier to understand the manuals. doing much of my photography while travelling, i have been using a macbook which i had maximized in terms of ram, power, memory, etc, but wondering if that is part of the problem, maybe i need to upgrade to a macbook pro, or a desktop? or just have more than one, and smaller, catalogs?
