    Looking away

I think the man was another photographer, and maybe we'll see his photos here! Yesterday was a bitter cold day in Chicago and I saw at least two other photographers walking down the lakefront snapping shots of the frozen lake. Thanks for your comments. Don

This looks like a beautiful spot. The top left hand side looks too dark to me and the shot looks out of focus. The fern/branch on the right also distracts, but these are just my opinions. Given the beauty of this location, you really want to get it right, no? Thanks for posting this. Don

Cliche, well sunsets, skyscrapers, and unclothed sirens also are cliches. I like the colors and DOF very much. My wife was a ballet dancer for many years and this nicely captures a moment at the barre, in my opinion anyway. Thanks. Also thanks much for your feedback on one of my photos.

    Where did you take this?

  1. Great shot, but I'm sure you did a lot more than point and shoot the amazing Holga! I've spent some time looking at your beautiful portfolio, and decided to get a Holga and see what I can make, although I can only dream of doing the kind of work you have posted. Thanks.

Nice face and features. Effective cropping. Looks like it was shot outside - and this would be stronger if there had been a fill flash to get rid of the shadow at the bottom and separate the chin-beard from the t shirt. Thanks. Don

I really enjoy looking at the photos you post, and so do my sons. The Alien is one reference, but there was also the Schwatzenegger movie (14 years ago?) where one mutant had another human-mutant growing out of its chest. Thanks for posting this, and also for providing the link to your friend's web site. I guess some Finns are spending the dark winter indoors... Don
  2. You have a great location for shots like this, apparently onstage or in the pit. Maybe the shot would be better if the lights weren't visible and the primary dancer were facing the camera. I'd guess the dancer would not like this shot too much because she seems to be awkward while I'll bet she's really beautiful. My wife was a professional dancer for several decades so I'll check your portfolio to find other shots like this. Nevertheless, the idea here is definitely something worth pursuing, but I don't think you're there yet. This is just my opinion. Don
  3. I like the shapes made by the meeting of trees and snow, concave in the front and convex in the back - could the perspective be widened on the left hand side to emphasize these shapes? If not, how about taking this shot again when a herd of moose is walking through?

As for national neighbors, I'd guess any country with Finland's geography would have reasons for strong borders :-) Americans should not be giving advice on getting along with neighbors or other nations, ya know?

  4. Thanks for the history lesson and link. My father always disliked the Russians and the Swedes - lots of Americans know about problems with the Russians, but they have a hard time understanding anti-Swede feelings, especially since the only Swedes known around here are blond beautiful women... (Apologies to Swedish PN subscribers!) Oops, guess we should be talking about photography.

  5. I like this very much - nice capture of a beautiful scene. Incredible light at that time of day! My gradnparents came from Finland, Viipuri (spelling?) 90 years ago, and I hope to visit some day. Thanks. Don
  6. This is a beautiful spot - I could spend a lot of time there with these colors and textures, but since I'm in Chicago I'll have to settle for your photo... I think a filter might solve the sun problem while allowing you to keep the colors, light, and shadow - but that's just my opinion.
