1.
If "dead" means a lack of updates, then it's old news; it's been dead for awhile. But the same was said of Snapseed when Google bought it and it's perhaps the number one editing app on mobile.

 2.

You want to keep those Nik edits you'll have to save it to the tiff version of the Raw image which now creates a second file, the tiff. Raw plus a tiff means there are two files of the same captured scene.

Of course it does. Most of us open files in photoshop and then save our works as a tif/psd. A layer of a Nik filter, that can be turned off/on/blended is inconsequential. Do you instead only have a hard drive full of raw files and then export to jpg when you need to print or send to web?

Still no one else besides Supriyo posted a before and after example of a Nik software edit to show it couldn't be done in a Raw converter

I'll gladly post a raw nef in a public dropbox folder for all of us here to access and use Nik filters. You, Tim, can show how us to duplicate it in ACR. Up for it?

 3.

I'm not eager or tolerant having to manage duplicates of all my thousands of Raw images

Someone post a before and after sample image applying any of the free Nik software that makes an image look like something new and unique and never seen before out of the trillions posted online.
Really! I'm serious. I don't think it's worth the added complexity in my workflow having two versions of my Raw images.

IF you didn't (see below), you need to work on your writing skills:

I agree with Andrew. (Did I really just say that?). It sounds like Tim is under the impression that Nik creates another version/duplicate (like dng) of every single one of his 1000 raw files. Strange.

We're discussing creating two versions of the same image that look different from each other because someone's creative vision just can't manage to get it all done in the Raw converter.
Here's a tip...Learn to do it in the Raw converter. It's possible but no one wants to spend time finding out.

Tim, it's not possible to achieve in the raw converter what you can get, for free, in the Nik suite. With the amount of arguing you've done in this thread, you could have found this out for yourself

 4.
Google sure is at the forefront of mobile photography. It's interesting times. We now have Adobe Lr finally working on a mobile OS (Android) as well being able to shoot raw files. The Snapseed app edits raws on the phone and I assume that NIK is going to as well.

 5. Cool stuff. https://plus.google.com/+NikCollection/posts/AFGsG2Di7EK
 6. I used to do yymmdd and now my files from 2001 are listed before 1999. Instead, yyyymmdd should start your naming convention, imo. With ten files or a quarter of a million, it's the only way to ensure your folder of files is listed in chronological order.
 7.

So, what should I import to lightroom? Just the files I need to edit? Or everything I have? I like the Smugmug plugin and like that I could edit my galleries right from lightroom.
Obviously though, I am doing this backwards. I'm not sure if my imported files to lightroom would be recognized as duplicates in smugmug or if they would be recognized as existing galleries. Any thoughts?

Jennifer, I'd buy the DAM book by Peter Krogh. It seriously would save you a lot of time instead of making mistakes from trial and error or getting bad advice from the internet. Your imported Lr files will not be seen as duplicates on Smug if you don't touch the file name.

So I started making a catalog per year starting with 2015 and going backwards. Some of the early digital years wasn't so big so I merged these together.
If you want to do it this way depends on you.

Multiple catalogues defeats the purpose of Lr. I suggest you use one catalogue. Lr is nothing more than a MySql Lite database file and is easy for most computers to handle.

I don't rename files, and seldom assign key words (which are also hard to manage).

You should. Files should be named in yyyy/mm/dd and then a 4 digit sequence number. And for me, Lr without keywords would be pointless. I'm confused how they could be considered hard to manage...it's a tiny .txt file that I've been using since Lr1.3. I export it to the Lr folder and it gets backed up with the catalogue and preferences etc.

 8. Does ones Adobe ID and subscription to CC 2016 have anything to do with ownership of previous versions like CS5? But like Jeff says, deactivate CS5 will allow you to install CS5 again on other computers
 9.
Yes, just download and install it. Save your user preferences and actions etc from CS5, though. It's for two computers and on any platform (finally).

 10.

Anyone using internal hard drives, ie: an extra hard drive inside the case, say d:?

Yes, I used to do that up until 10 years ago or so. But I kept the power disconnected when I didn't need it. When I wanted to use that drive to duplicate my data, I'd power down, open the side the of the computer case, connect the power plug, and boot up, duplicate, power down and reverse order. It was faster and more reliable than an external but was fully aware it was just a duplicate and not a backup

I'm up to three copies on hdd's (internal, external, and nas) as well as optical and cloud.

 11.

Oh. Well I find it pretty useful myself :)

I find the EC dial really useful too.

 12.
Lol, of course. I can't believe that didn't trickle in. Thanks Ciaran. Yes, within your thumbs reach on the back, the x-t1 has ae-l, af-l, and the 'focus assist' button. One can of course assign any of these buttons in the custom menu to perform which ever task you wish.

 13.
I just picked up a used X-T1 to test the Fuji waters and love it. It has three large round dials on the top for controlling shutter, exposure comp, and iso, as well as an aperture ring on the lens where there is supposed to be one. It's a joy to use

 14.
Once necessary? Lol. More than ever if you ask me. 60% of your population is in poverty and doesn't even have $1000 in the bank in case their car breaks down.

 15. "Every experience I have had with Unions in a relatively long life, both as a worker and manager has been negative." Yeah, Sandy, weekends off, a 40hr work week, and health benefits are a big negative
 16.
I'm not sure, Tim. For most, it's a completely irrelevant test in this Instagram world. I just bought the Nexus 6 because it shoots raw and with the free Snapseed app, it opens the dng and you edit and share just like you would normally to a jpg. When you get home, you have the dng. With the market share that mobile phones have taken away from point and shoots along with the serious photography that's done on mobile, it's long over due that we have access to the raw files on our smartphones. And now we have Adobe on board.

It wont be long before we are capable of using Lr and Ps on $200 computers that only need an internet connection to access our files.

 17.
It will be missed for sure. My dad still can't grasp the concept of tabs in Chrome or Firefox or how to upload to youtube. But I put him on Picasa in 2005 and was simple for him to use and alter his pictures from the point and shoot. I'm not sure what to suggest to him now.

 18.
And now for something completely different....Adobe Lightroom for Android!

http://petapixel.com/2016/02/22/lightroom-android-2-0-worlds-first-end-end-mobile-raw-app/#more-204335

 19.
Death to Picasa, birth to Adobe Lightroom for Android!

http://petapixel.com/2016/02/22/lightroom-android-2-0-worlds-first-end-end-mobile-raw-app/#more-204335

 20.

What I would like to do is leave the external drive home, travel with the laptop and be able to view my photos and, if possible, make adjustments to them.

Am I understanding you correctly that you wish to leave the external drive at home, but still access the photos that are on it, with your laptop?

You could put the contents of the external drive in the cloud with Google Drive, Dropbox, or MS Onedrive. The best thing to do I feel, is make a NAS and have your own private cloud that you can log into, upload etc

 21. Great info in the comments section on how to prevent it. https://fstoppers.com/apps/adobe-cc-bug-erases-data-macs- 114772
