1. harman, what you say is what i normally do. unfortunately once or twice in the midst of a shooting frenzy, i have forgotten to push the leader all the way in, and inadvertently, used the roll later only to find, much to my chagrin, double exposed film. i guess i should just concentrate more.
  2. Paul, i am just a newbie hobbyist (a student still) who is in STL also. i was in Forest Park this weekend and saw several "pros" shooting engagements out there. i *hopefully* got some good shots of several couples rowing in boats (still shoot film) as well as some good portraits of my family who was in town visiting.

So, definitely the F Park, also some places off Hwy 94 (towards the vineyards), as well as the Botanical Gardens are "musts". Good luck.

  3. well, the one thing that discourages me from going the M3 route and lean more likely towards the Bessa route is the builtin meter. yes, i am still novice enough that i can't just really guess what settings should be used (nor do i financially want to back my guessing via film), nor do i want to use an external meter. the latter to me sorta defeats the purpose of having a quick and light system in the first place. now if an M6 TTL sells for in the $500 range one day, i'll be sure to snap that one up!

thanks for all the insightful responses here.

  4. thanks for the detailed answers and the fantastic images! i thought about posting this question on the leica forum, but figured i'd get devoured or something - from just reading a few posts there, it seems like the wild and wooly west. i prefer the more lawful wedding forum!

have you guys(gals) used the Bessas by chance? they seem to be much more affordable, especially since i am still a student. sure i don't expect a leica in a bessas clothing, but for a beginner RF, would you recommend that? or, is one better off (in a minimalistic, low profile sense) getting something like a used A-1 or FM body, but then deal with things like mirror slap, etc?

basically, i dont always like lugging around my whole setup - elan iie+grip+lenses all over the place. especially with all these people getting in trouble taking pics of "high key" places, sometimes one just wants a low profile. with that in mind, if i go the Bessa RF route, i can always buy an adapter and use FD or nikon mount or M42 mount lenses. or is an old manual FD or nikon body/lens (say just a 35 and 50 for low light) better? i truly enjoy shooting slides, but would like to (and need to) venture out in the b&w home developing route.

    thanks again!

  5. "However, a sort-by-date would allow you to look at the latest postings, if that is your goal. But, I thought one can do that now, no?"

if one can, alas i am ignorant of this knowledge. please, someone enlighten me.

  6. I have read many of the threads regarding the recent changes here, but

didn't see any results regarding this, nor in a search.

Anyhow, when you click on a person's name, it shows the last 3

pictures that he/she posted. oftentimes, if one checks certain people

periodically, but say every 2 weeks or so, those posters might have

placed more than 3 new shots in their folders. is it possible, say on

the big gallery page view (which in some people's galleries can have

over 100 shots), such as in the example below:

    <a

it would be nice to see them sorted in order uploaded. this way, you

can also perhaps see the progression in one's skills (ok, so if they

post chronologically), but still, i think this could be useful.

    thanks for the consideration.

  7. sorry, i forgot i posted this thread even - i normally don't visit this forum. I should have put "sexist cameras ?" as the title - left out the ?. My point is that if they are designing it for females in mind, fine, just don't "say" it as such. for to me, a camera is a gender neutral thing. sure it can have various colors, but suppose a straight man likes a particular color advertised as a "female model". that to me from a marketing standpoint would perhaps scare some potential buyers, which is the opposite of what most manufacturers would want. If you started advertising the Mazda Miata as a female car, do you think many males would buy it? but rather, have it in some colors that tend to favor well with females, as well as those with males, and you have effectively increased your product appeal. just my thoughts, however.
  8. I can't believe some people are living in the dark ages. BenQ has

introduced a new camera which is:

Targeted at females, the E40 features an intuitive touch screen

with photo framing and "scrawling" options and equipped with a 4

    mega-pixel high sensitivity image sensor.

what about gay males who like this color, or heaven forbid, straight

males who just happen to have wild tastes in color?

  9. I'm comfortable with the subject matter, but will the couple and guests like a clearly stereotypical guy next door look with a progressive attitude?
Are these events ever subject to additional security or legal considerations?

relax man, they just want to have you there as a photographer, not a piece of meat on showcase! And, the only reason to consider security/legal stuff is if they are having it downtown NYC during the Repulican convention!

Other than that, just treat the people you would any other people - normal, rednecks, yuppies, etc. - they aren't going to grow extra long teeth in the middle of the ceremony or draw blood! (sorry, couldn't resist).

just make sure you don't look or feel uncomfortable during the ceremony - whether perceived or in actuality. as marc said above, either you can do it and DO do it, or you can't. g'luck either way.

  10. I didn't mean to imply that one had to use the latest greatest to get good pics (sorry if my post came across that way). i just thought with the viewfinders on Al's pic, the bodies were older models (excluding Al himself, of course). I didn't realize previously the info that Al posted about needing them for the wideangle lenses. if i had the money, it certainly seems like an excellent photog "skillset" to learn - using RFs. alas, i will have to wait until i get out of school for those things. :(
