1. well, since the upgrade firmware has been pulled, the instructions are moot. As far as new cameras, it all depends on when they were manufactured and when they get to your store. I imagine things made now or later would be less likely to have problems vs. the ones that were first made. What this latency period, only canon could really tell you.

can't help you with the AF vs. 10D question. In the 2 weeks i used the 20D, i think the AF on my elan IIe was a tad faster, but that could also be just me getting adjusted to using the new camera vs. one i have shot for over a year.

  2. jeff, perhaps it might mean they actually have real issues/problems with the equipment? and god forbid, they might actually have a working neuron upstairs. I am sick and tired of posts regarding "oh those whiners, complainers, yadda yadda, ad nauseum." If people who are tech savvy and know what they are doing are having problems, i want to know.
  3. Oh, i do not know where my 20D was built. it looked like it was

"well handled" in the factory, that's for sure. Actually for my hands, i thought the body was a bit too small. I had also ordered a grip which came in the day before i went to return it. So, i never got to try it with the grip. However, if you look at FM, dpreview.com or robgalbraith.com, you'll see many complaints of the grip being loose or not fitting well (along with the already established lock-up problem) on the body even when the screw is completely tightened.

My guess is that canon pulled a micro$oft here - rushed to put a market as soon as possible without really good beta testing or really tight quality control and thinking only of annual profits to give to the shareholders - not customer satisfaction.

For a $1500 piece of equipment, i expect it to work quite well and for some time. That's near the amount of money that people on minimum wage make in a month, so it's certainly nothing to sneeze at. Perhaps next month i might try my luck again and purchase a body that has already been firmware upgraded to begin with.

i keep forgetting to check this thread! :) FM is fredmiranda.com

It is another website, primarily for digital SLR folks (though there are lots of analog shooters there as well) who are mostly pros and semi-pros. Mostly american and quite a few europeans, with some asian representation there as well. you might want to check it out - lots of good info there with lots of good help as well. The owner has written several plugins and actions for photoshop which i use. i highly recommend the B&W plugin (look under software on the main page). Most of my pics here are all slides, but B&W converted using that plugin.

  5. charles,

as much as i wanted an EOS3, i just couldn't come around to buying after much research. Holding the PB-E2 with the body was fairly heavy. Add a heavy lens and boy, things get even heavier! Also, the interface was quite different from the prosumer bodies - elans, etc.

I think i am going to hold off with only an elan iie as my only EOS body for now. I did buy, but subsequently return the 20D due to the lockup and shoddy quality control - some of the letters were nearly worn away and i bought it new! As far as film goes, i think i will buy a small compact RF for biking and point & shoot duties - a cosina bessa R2a or R3a.

sorry couldn't help you more with the EOS3. For price comparisons, most people i see these days sell the body alone for $450 or so. There was a well respected guy on FM who sold the body for $420 (incl fedex 2 day air) plus an extra $30 starbucks card included. My local camera dealer has one with the PB-E2 in good condition for $599 (plus 5% discount for students). Perhaps in another couple of years if no canon DSLR has ECF and i find a good deal on a fairly new one, i might go down that road again.

    Good luck on your purchase!

  6. Ok, so i am a RF newbie, but would the 40mm framelines work on a 35mm attached lens? i want to get the 3A and the 40mm but dont want to count out the possibility of getting the 35 1.2 nokton in the future.

on the cameraquest website, it states

"While the R3A has no 35 frameline, it appears from the Cosina diagrams that the entire field of view outside the 40mm frame may be usable as a 35 finder."

anyone care to shed more light? thanks.

Oh, as to quantities shot. Who cares? When working as a painter, I didn't measure how much paint I used. Or when drawing, how many pencils I used. When making photographs, I just shoot what I see and feel. With film I carry a big bag of it. With digital a slew of CF cards. I may never use all of it, but I'll never run short either.

Marc, out of curiosity, do you have any web images of paintings/drawings other stuff you've done? i really enjoy your creativity in your photography and would like to see your delvings in other media. thanks.
