Hi,
I just put up new content on my website. I would be grateful for any comments you expert photographers have.
thank you very much!

Thank you Suzanne.

I have been approached by Getty images on Flickr. They are interested in licensing my work. I am not satisfied with my current stock agency (who shall remain nameless for now) because of the low returns I get. It could be that my work is not good enough or not commercial enough or that there is low demand for images from Malawi. It could also be that I am not with the right agency. How do I find the best stock agency for my work? Does anybody have good ideas about this?

Thank you all.
@ Andrew: can I simply move the catalog with windows from my C drive to the external drive? I thought there was more to it than that. Do I need to have LR running while I move it?
@Rob: there is a folder "backups" Can I simply remove that with no influence on the way LR runs? It is the biggest folder there.

-

Thank you.
I set "store presets with catalog". How do I move the catalog so that LR will recognize it? The images are already on the external drive.

I am going on the road and I need more space on my internal hard drive. The lightroom catalogue takes up quite a bit of space. Can I move it to an external hard drive without creating problems? Can I, while I am on the road, use a temporary catalogue on my internal drive?

Thank you, guys. I got it working now. And sure, Gary, I need to learn Lightroom better.

-

Thank you Howard. This is a bit technical for me. Can you give me a step by step explanation? (I'm not that good with the catalogue features)

I went on a shoot out of town. I imported the images in Lightroom on my laptop. Then in the hotel room I did some edits. Then I came home and copied the folder (outside lightroom) to my external drive. Now the external drive does not have the edits I did not the laptop. Is there a way to copy these edits to the external drive, or copy the photos and edits to the external drive in one go?

Is the lock right under the multi-selector (that you use to move the focus point) disabled?

I work with Lightroom. I use a folder on my internal hard drive to edit the files, this is faster than external. I keep a backup on external hard drive. After I finish, I want to transfer the edits to the files on the hard drive so I can erase the files from my internal drive. How do I do this?

Thank you all.
The tent is not translucent.
I am talking about the interior. The exterior is not really a problem.I can use early morning sunlight for it.
You can see the available light at the quicky test photo at the link in my post. It is not too bad, but I'd like something more spectacular.
Painting with light is risky: I have no experience in such a big space, and I have no big space available to practice. Of course I will make regular pix with available light to be sure to have something, but if the client puts in money, I'm going to have to come up with something good.
I could try painting with light at night, so I have less daylight interfering when I use a long exposure. My camera goes to 30 secs max, but I can overlay multiple exposures.
JC: why is film better for painting with light?

-

Thanks. Yeah, thought of that. Big job, but maybe the only way. To get it right I need to test first, and I don't have a room big enough for that.

I have been asked to make promo photos of a huge tent that can hold up to 1200 people for a conference or dinner (or even wedding). This is far to big for my limited lighting equipment, and there is almost nothing for rent in the little remote African country I work in. Anyway, it will be very difficult to place lights, as the whole place should be visible in the overall shots. Available light is not very good. Any ideas how I can make this work?

Thank you very much, this is very helpful.
Mark, I will be going that way.

I have a request from a small pharmaceutical company here in Africa needing product photography. They have never dealt with a license and a restriction on use of photographs. How do I explain that I need to restrict their use, and charge again if they re use the photos (after a years license included in the photography fee)?

-

I got a request from a small local pharmaceutical company for product and package photography, 36 photos in total. They want simple images, white background. Should I charge a licencing fee on top of work charge? IN what range would that be?

-

It is clearly visible: there is a difference in colour temperature between this light and my other lights.
I have tried a common white wash detergent, and that did not work. I am afraid bleach is my only option. The material feels a bit like nylon sails for a sailing boat but then thinner.

-

I have a multiblitz striplight. the front cover has yellowed over time, giving yellowish light in stead of white. carefully washing it does not help. it has a label saying: PROREC 35 (i think, the label has also faded) does someone have experience with this material? could I use bleach safely?

-

I was asked to provide some images for picture postcards. Does anyone have guidelines on pricing for this type of use?

-

Thank you, that should be a solution. I now name my drives from Z bakcwards. Patrick, thank you for the complex and interesting story.

-

When I start up, depending on how I connect different devices, my computer sometimes names an external hard drive G: sometimes H:, sometimes K:. That changes the path to my photos. So far I never paid attention to this, until I started working with Lightroom. If the drive is named differently, Lightroom looses track of the photos. I can use "find missing folder", but I find it inconvenient. Is there a way around this?

Thank you for your extensive response, I'm going to try this. I was actually amazed at the accuracy of the filter in camera. It no doubt uses the headroom in the raw files to get it right.

books for beginners class

I teach photography at the University of Malawi. I have a class of graphic designers coming up, that I will teach
a little photography in 12 lessons. The starting level is low. The available equipment minimal, some have no more
than a camera-phone available. I do a practical training: make photos. A headshot, an environmental portrait, a
product photo, an architecture photo etc. I can order a few books for the library. Everything we have there is
out of date. I need a book on general photography, one on light, one on photoshop, one on composition. Which
books (in English) would be the best for this target group?
