  1. The pictures I have on my website show as different sizes on Internet Explorer than they do on Firefox and Chrome. Any idea why this is please and how I might control it? Naturally I've checked that the zoom ratio on all three browsers is the same at 100%. I'm aware that I can equalise sizes on my screen by changing zoom ratios but that doesn't influence what others will see. Thanks
  2. I don't shoot medium format nowadays, but I did for quite a few years and this is why. 1. I wanted to make larger prints than I could comfortably get from 35mm cameras. The projects I was working on 15 years ago required prints up to about 24" sq. 2. The biggest and best Photo libraries would then accept only medium format transparencies which they would have drum scanned , sometimes at their own expense. Neither of these factors apply today- partly as a function of changes in the market, partly because materials to make "prints from slides" haven't really been available for many years now. The advent and improvement of Dslrs has mean that I can do what I need from those cameras which offer large increases in convenience and cost to use. No way can I make the same size prints from a Dslr than I used to from drum scanned or Imacon scanned 6x6 slides. But then I don't need to either. and I'm saving huge amounts of money each year.
  3. I use a mix of Canon and third party. I don't keep records of how many shots before I have to change it, but I frankly think that with about six batteries in use its unlikely I'm using any battery more than say 8-10 charges a year and some will be less. Mostly the batteries just sit in the camera bag decharging, which I don't imagine is the way to preserve performance best.. My perception is that I get 100-300 shots from each depending probably more depending on my usage patterns (long exposures, lots of checking images on my cards) that whether it is an OEM or an off-brand. I'd expect and will tolerate a slightly worse performance from 3rd party batteries- but I don't know that I get it consistently or not.
  4. Like David Triplett I imagine. Import raw files from cards to Lightroom . In that environment carry out basic processing/deletion/organising/selection tasks Export to hard drive as Tiffs and use Photoshop ( in my case a reasonably elderly CS5 ) to complete processing and convert to Jpeg if necessary for the final application- I still prefer some of the tools in PS to their LR equivalents. Many people would use the cheaper PS Elements rather than full -blown Photoshop, though frankly if you're starting from zero then the combined Adobe subscriptions including full PS offer good value I have a small raft of other tools on my machine that get used infrequently. Nik suite ( I like the noise reduction and BW conversion options. PT Lens. Perfect Resize. But the thing about these is that you can accumulate them as you have a real need for them- you don't have to get them (mostly free) load them and absorb them up front and so you can spread the learning curve. To pick up on an earlier response. Photo.net can provide you with free help, and was set up to give mutually supportive help to those that ask for it. Sometimes it is necessary to say that the questioner should do more themselves, but I don't see this as one of them and indeed most responders here have managed to give assistance in a paragraph or two without mutterings about "free education". Frankly if people aren't prepared to share their expertise and give a little time to others, this is not IMO the right place to be.
  5. I had to sign in just to like Brads comment above. Seems I have to sign in in full- no help with email that nearly all other sites offer- every time I use an iPad. From my desktop when I'm home I can sometimes go a couple of days
  6. I guess these days, with a grown up family, I find it easy to divide my travel into two. First is when photography is the prime objective. The only person getting an invite ( and mostly she'll say yes) is my wife who long ago learned that I tend to photograph in visually interesting places, though she's normally still abed if I go out early. There is normally a little non photo activity built in, but we're both pretty clear why we're there. Then there is travel to be with other people, maybe old school or college friends meting up in Rome or Paris or wherever. Then I simply don't take a camera and enjoy the trip for totally different reasons.. If I want to photograph those locations we'll stay over a couple of days before or after. When the kids were young and travelled with us I would photograph a bit early and late but it would normally be alone and normally carried out alongside things like buying breakfast if we had rented a house. Few photographs from those times survive as honestly they weren't generally too good-too much compromise. Virtually every photo I've got that I value has come out of a trip specifically arranged for photography rather than as a by product of vacation travel.
  7. I agree that its not easy- maybe not possible- to be a guest and the photographer at an event . I once photographed at a friends wedding, because he kept asking not because I wanted to do it or viewed it as a commercial opportunity, and wouldn't do it again as it spoiled the day for me and my wife . But I did once, and quite successfully I think, carry out a major project for the company in which a buddy was both a senior manager and my contact- agreeing briefs and proposals, setting prices, signing off the bills etc. The friendship continued through what turned out to be a major project over several years , and continues still, a decade after the project was completed and wound down. I think it worked because we both understood "arms length", & made sure that everything was documented and that the invoices matched the proposals. It was managed exactly as if I was working with a client I didn't know at all, and all decisions were properly documented.
