  1. brake = break (my goodness.. non native speaker but, well..)
  2. Haha! Thought it was time to brake that dam.. (or should I have chosen a more neehilistic approach..?)
  3. I'm starting to feel all Monty Peehton'ish because of this conversation.. Knights Who Say Ni - Wikipedia
  4. Looking forward to two weeks of ecological fieldwork in Eastern Europe, I am still contemplating "what to take with me", photography-wise. D800 undoubtedly, 60mm macro lens yes, doubling as a standard, and then..? - 15 or 20? - 70-200/4.0.. very universal lens, most probably 'yes' - my trusted 400/3.5.. or the (always just too short) 300/4.0 AF..? Obviously, taking a 'supertele' in addition to the long zoom will be a regretable (sp.?) burden during those two weeks. It is in THOSE cases that a P900 or P1000 would come to the rescue! ..But at this moment I cannot afford the expense.
  5. Abuko Nature Reserve, The Gambia 2006, D200 300/4.0 AF + TC14B Is that 'old school' enough?
  6. Well.. I have the 24-70/2.8 AFS.. and rarely find it on my camera. Yes, it is a very good lens. But it is too large for situations where I 'just want to take my camera'. ..which is: most of the time. Thus, most of the time I end up with a 50mm or 60mm attached (D800; and in less casual occasions the 70-200/4.0 as lengthy addition). I can always go 'wide angle' by stitching. That perfect, good and small zoom is also somewhere on my wishlist.
  7. Obviously, a most valid question. Which reminds me of the fact that I still have my beloved D200 lying around.. still good. But 10Mpx is somewhat limited .. good for stitching panorama's and still like the colours. But: read the entire (haha!) Which Nikon DSLR would you recommend for me? thread! And then buy the D800 ;-) Not to say that just this morning I was walking around in Dutch nature with two happy D7200 owners.
  8. Mmtsja.. Myriads indeed. But I suppose that if you want AF the choice is much more limited already.. I have.. AIS 85/2.0 and AIS 105/2.8 and.. well, the 70-200/4.0 covers it too.. And the AF 60/2.8 is in range..
  9. For what's it worth: I liked my F801 screen best! Above F3 and F4. Proven by number of manually focused catwalk shoot 'keepers'. F100 probably similar. .?
  10. Oh well.. Admittedly I still watch DVDs on a smallish HD TV screen.. But a large 4K screen is just over the horizon. So.. If I was serious with video I would not try to work in HD .. Also depending on the expected longevity of the film of course. An instruction video or birthday message might not need 4K resolution.. That's where DSLRs like D800 and D750 for example are fine choices still
  11. Good arguments above, regarding the video function of Nikon DSLR camera's. That however strongly resonates with the "Nikon's 12Mpx is enough" statement that was endlessly repeated some years ago. Until it wasn't enough. (I saw some large prints in an exhibition last weekend and was properly amazed .. SONY camera, but oh well ). I want professional quality photo results even when I'm not a 'pro' . Same for video. Whether DSLR's are suitable for a pro workflow is not for me to judge here..
  12. That's a thing.. I do not hesitate recommending the D800 as a perfect camera for the current prices, or getting one myself as a backup. But video.. I did make use of it once and liked the process and results. But video has moved on! from HD to 4K. That now would in fact be one of the main points of doubt. For still photography, few camera's beat the D800, even more modern ones. But modern video comes at a premium. Even finding a dedicated 4K camcorder at a reasonable price seems a challenge.
  13. I see the prices of used D800's have gone down remarkably! Good ones seem to be going for around €1000 and >€900 seems very well possible (Netherlands/Europe). Still own and use one, bought new in 2012. No complaints at all, except maybe that AF could be a tad better. So: recommended!
  14. Thank you for the link! I found that one, but it doesn't offer the old latches (and/or just the knobs) anymore.. And more suprisingly: it also doesn't offer 'just' the central base plate bolt, but only the entire base plate as replacement. The search goes on.. keep me posted!
  15. For many years I have happily used an old Gitzo G500 'Studex Performance' with 3 leg parts and no centre column. For some strange reason, now I have another one!! The second one has 4 leg parts, that seem to work fine. What is missing though, are the knobs on the leg 'latches' (see right in the photo for example). AND the central bolt for attaching a head is missing. Does anyone of you know where to find these parts? The basic replacement items from the official Gitzo website do not cover these (anymore). Thanks for your help and advice!
  16. Well, that's what the archives + a search function are for, are'n't they? Spam aside.. I love old threads coming back (like the one on the 400/3.5 a week or so ago). On topic: I Always switch off.. But in a loose bag, my D800 sometimes gets eehh.. 'turned on', with the central button being pressed continuously, draining the battery...
  17. ..I still have the lense.. (see posts above from some time ago)
  18. I can not think of an application where the 105 x2 would make up for the hassle of less-resolution and less light! Well: the photography of frogs perhaps * .. but then I would start with a 105-micro in the first place. Otherwise: - get closer to your subject! - crop afterwards (if you have pixels to spare) - get one of the 200's (although my 200/4.0 AI sees no use at all nowadays, since my excellent 70-200/4.0 AFS VR!) * longer working distance desirable and small apertures used most often..
  19. Thanks for taking me through all these arguments, gentlemen (well.. I think most of you are .. and very few women seem to be eager to discuss these very very important matters! ;-) ) I am (also) still very happy with a D800, and D300 + D200 as 'backups'. Needless (?) to say: those two see little use, nowadays. Prices of second hand D800's have been dropping gradually and seem to be hovering around €1000 now in The Netherlands. Somewhat below the D850 new, let's say .. in fact €2700 below a new D850! Which doesn't mean that I can just spend those €1000 on a second D800 right now, so your thanks again for your arguments.
  20. Good eehh.. morning. Grey, slight drizzle sometimes. The Netherlands, Utrecht. Taken with the little camera that Nikon SHOULD have made.. Taken with a eehh.. Nikon-eye on the world.
  21. I took a (say) thousand images with such a lens on slidefilm and (mainly) F801. And really appreciated it in that period (1988-1995?). But now I would never buy it and/or use it. Not wide enough, variable aperture, 3.5-4.5... There are (much) better options. Paper weight?
