1. Eehh.. use the lenses you have! Put the camera on a sturdy (..) tripod, set the aperture at f/ 8 and a shutterspeed of 1/125sec or faster. Make sure that the group is as compact as possible and is looking at the camera at the same time. For that to happen, do not allow anyone else beside you. Good luck!
 2.

50/2.0 AI @ f/2.0 ISO800 on D800. No post processing.

I rather like this small lens! Out of focus backgrounds are indeed smoother than the 50/1.8 siblings. And beyond f/2.0 it is really very sharp. And it costs next to nothing to own one..

 3. No special advice for buying 2nd hand. Yet another vote for the old AF 300/4.0. Friends of mine had different incarnations of the MF 300/ 4.5 & 400/5.6 and were never really happy with handling and images. Also on sensor.
 4. I started lusting for a F5 a while ago (typical episode of NAS) when the prices went really down and everyone seemed to be dumping their film camera's. I didn't do it. Like written above, also my F3 and F4 and Nikkormats are gathering dust as ornaments. Film is practically over.
