Great juxtaposition, beautiful light, lovely composition.

This has an old quality that I like very much--it reminds me of a slightly faded slide from another time....

Jack, I have claimed to be getting a digital camera I'll carry but apparently it's all talk and no action. Sending film off for processing and scanning today--I have no idea what's on it--so perhaps I'll have something to post one day soon. Life is quite busy, writing every day, looking for an agent, and making sure the cat is happy. Best, Dan

Ah Petaluma! This photo has a serene quality I cannot quite pinpoint; I am also tempted to anthropomorphize the windows as eyes, in which case the building appears to have a benevolent gaze.
-
Ah, magic!
-
Perhaps it's supposed to be inviting, but it looks pretty scary to me.
-
I love the composition, and the title. I think you are every bit as much a poet as a photographer, Jack.

He who laughs last, laughs best....

I love the detail in the clothing against the detail in the street--it had a jangling energy that makes this photograph vibrate.
-
You have the wittiest eye around, Jack.
-
I must confess it is you, Jack. It's a new technique I call "photo hoodoo," and I hope to be casting more spells.
-
Thanks, Jack!

Billy and Carlos, Thanks for your kind words. When I kick the bucket I hope you guys will write my eulogy. I feel a renewed interest in photographing and a strange craving for film, which I may yet satisfy. Best regards, Dan

Excellent advice, Carlos! I should not be chasing rhinos with a point and shoot camera.

Todd and Jeff are on to something when they praise the background; for me it pushes the figure forward in space, literally in my face. The background lines work ike the "speed stripes" we sometimes see in cartoons to signal fast movement.
-
Intriguing--different. I love the interplay of the elements and the dynamism of the composition. The color has an oddly old-fashioned look, like some of the old color print processes...maybe I am just fooled by the square, which makes it look like it was shot with an old Rollie on Kodacolor X, if you remember that stuff. This is all a long way of saying I like it.

Ah, Jack! Irritable! Restless! Discontent! It's no fun being caught in the middle but you are definitely going somewhere. Some wise guy once said the important part of the search was the looking, not the finding.
-
I laughed when I saw it the first time, and I still think it's funny. Sometimes it's more satisfying to love the mystery than to solve it.
-
Subtle and intriguing...
-
First I said, "What?!?" Then I laughed. What a surreal moment!
-
Positively Erwitt-esqe!
-
Channeling Durante.

I confess I didn't see the birds. I simply liked the arrangement of shapes in space. I am still bothered by the lighter tones and would like to see them subdued. Perhaps I'll just take a couple aspirin. Dan

The reflection is mysterious and reminded me of a cross, which makes it sort of Billy Kenrick territory (high praise in my book).
