1. Thanks Shun, the G is nearly double the price of the D on the used market. That is why I wasn’t considering it.
 2. I’ve noticed many listings on eBay for the 17-35mm with a failing motor. My AF-S lenses are still working. I can’t go too much newer because I still shoot film with an F4s and F100.
 3. Can anyone tell me the difference between the mid 90’s era 600mm f/4 AF-S D ED and the version 2 launched in the early 2000’s The price difference doesn’t seem to be that much even though the version 2 lenses are harder to find.
 4. My N80 and F100 are sticky too. For whatever reason my cameras from the previous generation, F4s, N6006, N8008, do not have this problem. As others have pointed out Isopropyl Alcohol can remove the stickiness temporarily.
 5. I bought mine new in 2001 and it has squeaked (or whined) ever since 2004. It only does it the first couple of times that it searches for focus so I've always assumed that it is a corrosion issue.
 6.
I can certainly wait and see if the prices on the big AF-S lenses come down. A 600mm AF-S would be ideal but currently out of my price range.

 7.
Shun,

I am using ISO 50 and 100 mostly.

The reason I'm leaning toward the 500P is because I plan to use it with a 1.4x TC. I think the addition of the TC on the 200-500E would be too slow.

 8.
The 200-500mm would be in consideration if I could use it on any of my camera bodies.

 9. Chuck, That is a good point and something I had not considered. Wouter, I have both teleconverters, the tc17 and the tc20. I don't think the new zooms are an option for me because I am using an F4s and an F100. Craig, Since I am shooting film I don't think I could work with the slow max aperture of the mirror lens. Thanks everyone for your responses.
 10.
Hi,

I am currently using a 300mm F4 AF-S for wildlife images, with the addition of a TC-17 about 80% of the time. I find that most of the time I need even more reach but the 2x teleconverter never gave me sharp pictures. I cannot afford a modern super telephoto.

So my question is this. Do you think I should save for a used 500mm F/4 P (with the expectation that I will use it with a 1.4x TC often) ?
With the TC on the 300mm I end up focusing manually most of the time so I am used to it.
The only other alternative I see is waiting until I can afford one of the big AF-S lenses.
In either case I worry about spending that kind of money on such an old lens with no warranty.
What would you do?

 11.
Here is a bird. I can't remember if it was a sandhill crane or a blue heron.

 12.
A few years old but just scanned last night.

 13.
I didn't realize that Provia 400X was still available online. I guess I will order some and worry about this later.

 14.
I've been dreaming of a 600mm F/4 since I was 12.

 15.
Al,
Thanks for posting that sample image. The colors certainly aren't as vivid as Provia 400X but it does looks better than the results I got with a 2x push to velvia 100.

Stephen,
I agree that some fantastic shots were made before high ISO slide films were usably good. The problem for me is that I regularly use a 1.7x or 2x teleconverter on my 300mm F/4. If I could shoot at F/4, ISO 100 would be OK. The problem is when I have to shoot at F/6.3 or F/8

 16. I digitize some of my shots but really enjoy viewing the transparencies on a light box.
 17.
Hi,
I've just used up my last roll of Provia 400X, which I had been using for shooting wildlife with my telephoto lenses.
Now that it is discontinued I am not sure what to do. I've tried pushing Velvia 100 to 400 in the past and was not happy with the high contrast and grain that resulted.
So my question is..
Has anyone used Portra 400 for wildlife (including birds) shooting? If so, were you happy with the results?
It would be awesome if someone could post a sample image or point me in the direction of one.

Thanks.
-Nick
