  1. I sold all my Canon L glass and 10d and 20d to switch to the d200. None of he Canon bodies above the 20d offerred what I wanted at a price I wanted. The 5d had too slow of fps and lacked weather sealing, the 30d felt bulky and had no weather sealing, the 1dsMk2 was just too much $.

The D200 fits all my criteria - faster fps, weather sealing, excellent feel in the hand.

  2. I am an amatuer with a few local shows under my belt. I have been approached

by a tv/film production company that wants me to supply them with framed

photos for commercials and whatever else they do. They asked me because all

the images would be mone and they don't want to worry about copyright issues.

What would be the "issue" if I gave them a series of pictures that had a Lego

figure as the subject, or a GI Joe action figure, or a Ford truck, or an Apple

    Ipod?

    Thanks,

    Jay

  3. I am appreciating all the input so far. I (and others in the "business") consider myself a good photographer. I have been invited to do shows a few times. The pics my wife "complained" about are the ones that jsut seem to happen as part of every roll of film. I mean, not every shot is a keeper - thus the question of moving 100% (or close ) into digital. This particular roll had very few keepers. Sometimes it just goes that way. Please keep posting for me.

  4. By MF, I assume you mean manual focus rather than medium format, since I didn't mention I actually have a second medium format camera - a Lubitel... See, too many cameras, and not even enough space in my brain to remember them all.
  5. I always suffer from GAS. Currently I have

    [*]Canonet GIII QL17

    [*]Leica M6 w/ 50 cron and 35 ultron

    [*]Mamiya 7II with 3 lenses

[*]EOS 10D and 20D with many lenses, flash, ext rubes, etc

    [*]Contax G2 and G1 with 4 lenses

I also have a Nikon Coolscan IV and a Epeson 2450 scanner. Paired with an

Epson 1270 printer. I have dificulty printing though, so don't do as much as I

    should (workflow and calibration issues).

My wife just looked thru some prints I had done at the lab that came from my

GIII and M6. Her quote was:

"why did yu take those pictures?. Why take a picture of a newspaper on the

ground or some blurry shot of our dog, or someone sitting on a park bench?

Wouldn't all that be better on digital? Why waste chemicals and paper and all

that when you can sell all your film cameras and get a really nice digital

    camera?"

I always struggle with his issue. She also said to just use a film camera for

important things like holidays and things that are really important. uUse a

    digial for everything else.

I had the Contax gear on consignment to sell, then pulled it because I thought

I should keep that instead of the M6 that was it's replacement. The M6 was

because when in some exotic overseas country, I wouldn't want my camera

battery to die. I bought the Mamiya for "really" special landscape shots (I

haven't taken any yet). I bought the 20D to replace the 10D, so the 10D isn't

    an issue.

My shooting style is all over the board - my kids and their soccer games, my

kids in the living room, trying to get street shots of strangers, going to the

zoo for animal portraits, macro, and the quest for beautiful landscapes. With

3 kids (20 months up to 10 years, the overseas travelling and beautiful

landscapes seem to be not happening right now.

Now to my question if you haven't guessed. Sell it all and get the latest and

greates digital body from Canon? maybe even sell some Canon lenses to re-vamp

    my line up? I have 50/1.8, 17-40, 85/1.8, 70-200/4, 300/4. Replace it all with

a 5D, 24-105, and.......maybe keep the Canonet just for kicks. Somewwhere in

my mind, this makes more sense than multipl expensive film set-ups and

upper/middle of the line digital gear. Why not just go into pro digital gear?

I will post this to a digital group to get a balanced response ;)

    Thanks for your help

  6. Fabric softener, followed by a cycle in the washer did nothing. I realize part of the problem is the leather piece I have there to "protect" the camera body from rubs. It doesn't allow the o-ring to fall freely to the side of the camera. When the o-ring stops at horizontal, then so does the first few inches of strap.

I took the leather piece off, and the only place the metal ring could contact the body is when the strap is at a right angle to the body, and the tinist bit of ring can touch. Other than that, the strap itself acts as a bumper for the o-ring.

Is it really necessary to bumper the o-ring? I mean, when being carriend around, the ring can't touch the body.

  7. There is no proper place to post this, and since I the nylon webbing is

attached to a Leica camera, here it goes:

I have 2 Domke neck straps (one brown/one black). I am using them both on 2

different cameras. One has very slick, supple strap webbing on the thin length

that is closest to the camera. The other has stiffer webbing. The stiffer one

doesn't drape, and sometimes it will poke me in the eye when I raise the

camera up. Is there any way to make the stiffer webbing softer/more flexible?

I soaked it in 190 degree water for 20 minutes or so - no change.

I wonder if anyone in here has a solution, or is bothered by the same problem.

Don't get all mad at me for such a trivial question, but if I poke my eye out,

it may have far reaching ramifications.

    Thanks,

    Jay

  8. I bought a Sinar 4x5, then sold it because I wanted something faster to set up. I thought "there is no way I can take any pictures if someone else is hanging out with me as a non-photogrpher" (my wife). So I bought an RZ with 2 lenses, thinking "this will be awesome. I can set it up in no time - I'll be able to take it on hikes with the family". Well, I sold that for a Mamiya 7ii with 3 lenses. Heck, I don't even need the tripod anymore (although I should still use it). I have only run 2 rolls of film through, but I really like it.

I am not telling you to do it, just that I did. I discovered that I realy want to be more portable in my photography, sacrificing some in the way of negative size (4x5 down to 6x7).

  9. I bought a used Mamiya 7II. The camera worked fine in test mode, but as soon

as film was put in, I couldn't wind the cocking lever after the first shot. A

repair shop replaced the shutter release magnet. It worked as it should for

the first roll of film after that repair. During that roll, though, I decided

that when I was finished with the roll, I would have the RF adjusted (because

    I am picky).

That was done, and I just put a roll of film in, and have the same original

symptoms of not being able to cock the shutter after the first shot!

Camera dry fires in Multi mode just fine, and also in single mode when the

back is open. But put a roll fo film in, wind to the start arrow, close the

back, continue winding to "1", take a picture, then NO WINDING!!!!!!!!

Two different shops performed the magnet replacement and the RF alignment.

Coould something have gone wrong during the RF alignment, or is this a problem

of the release magnet from the first shop only functioning for a week? I am on

a mini vacation right now, so i cannot get the camera to either shop for a

couple of days. Then, I am planning (I hope not "was planning") on thaking the

mamiya to Alaska for a week in 10 days from now.

Any thoughts to ease my flippin' stress headache?

    Thanks

  10. Visit <http://www.naturephotographers.net/imagecritique/bbs.cgi?a=vf15%20target=>

On that site you can check out lots of places to shoot everything in and around PDX.

The river walk downtown (eastside) gives great vies of downtown in either morning or evening. You are looking west when you look a the skyline. So you can get the morning light hitting the buildings or you can get the backdrop of the sunset.

Drive 30 miles east on I84 to try to get sun pics in the Columbia river gorge.

    Tons of places. Enjoy PDX

  11. I just bought a used G2. When it is on, and the viewfinder display is

lit up (focus scale, shutter speed), I hear a faint beeping. If I

hold the camera still, the beep is about every second. If I move the

camera to a vertical orientation or such, then I get a few quick

beeps. When the viewfinder display turns off after not touching a

button, then the beeping stops. My G1 doesn't have this noise. Is it

normal? Is it due to the difference in focusing or metering systems

    on the G2?

  12. I had a Hoodman on my 10d for a while. A few times I forgot to close it after reviewing images, and poked myself in the eye when I went to take a shot. Not fun. Also, even though mine had a good fit, I was always pressing it back into place. I have gone back to a bare LCD for a while, and think if I were ti do it again, I might try one of the hard clear protectors like Nikon furnishes w/ their cameras.
