Larry, thanks for the comment. I agree varying the shutter speed can have a significant impact on the look of flowing water, and thus impact the mood. In this case, I was actually limited by low light, use of the polarizer and small aperture. 1/2 sec was about the fastest I could go. It did retain some texture, visible more on the lower right, which is about the amount I prefer. If I had gone much slower, it would've veered towards silky smooth, which I'm not a big fan of.

    Thanks again!

Wow, Marc. I've seen a lot of this style over the past couple years from many photographers, but few have been quite this stunning. My favorite part of this image is how it is so cleanly simplified into basic elements of aspen, willow and "background". What the "background" is made up of I'm not sure, but the beauty to me is that it doesn't matter. Your interpretation of this scene gives the viewer just enough to hold onto while preserving plenty of mystery. Well done. My favorite from your new posts so far.

Beautiful processing here. I love the luminosity of the water and moss. Very thoughtful composition as well with good flow from front to back and a clean arrangement of elements. Great work.

  1. Thanks, guys.

John, I did my best to reproduce the colors as I remember seeing them. It could be a monitor thing, but to my eye I'm not seeing too much cyan here. I also tend not to push the warmth too much, as I've found it can easily look contrived.

Mark, Owens Valley is indeed a wonderful place to be and to photograph. I'm not familiar with Summers Meadow, but then there are probably countless spots there that I have yet to discover. It's only a 4 hour drive for me, so I'll have many more opportunities!

    Lalit, thanks.

Regarding the light - It is rather flat and certainly not as dramatic as I'd sometimes like. But in this case I used that subdued, drab lighting to reinforce the contrast between the flower and its surroundings.

I chose this particular angle to highlight the flower's isolation by including an extended flowerless portion of the surrounding meadow.

  2. Thanks, guys. I left a bit of space at the bottom as I wanted to give the primary rock some breathing room. Also, I liked the way the deep shadow along the bottom edge serves as a border.

That said, I think the crop suggestion works as well.

  3. I find it a little busy, but it's well thought out and arranged. The B&W conversion helps to simplify the image, and the various bands of light and shadow help to break up the scene into distinct zones rather than allow it all to bleed together.

  4. Pre-dawn blue tones dominate the color spectrum here on a spring

morning at the Buttermilk Hills near Bishop, CA. This was taken well

before sunrise, so exposure and processing were handled to reflect the

low light and natural colors at the time of capture. Single exposure

double processed to manage the contrast between sky and deeply

shaded foreground. Thanks for any comments.

This might be my favorite from your new collection. I don't know that I've ever seen an image like this. Your use of dark space really makes this work for me. Great work.

Thanks, Lalit. You're right about the brightness gradient from top to bottom, but there was no way to avoid that in this case. I hadn't thought about evening it out in PS - it's an interesting suggestion, and one that I'll probably experiment with. Thanks again.
  5. I love it! One of my favorite landscapes from you. The foreground streaks are the perfect lead in, the twilight colors are just sublime and the composition is clean and well balanced. I've never made it up Pine Creek to these basins, but I really, really want to!
  6. Very well balanced composition. You have a distinct foreground, middlegroud and background creating nice depth. The shoreline is mirrored beautifully by the clouds, and the light is captured perfectly. Well done, Fiorenzo.
