  1. Hello,

Recently I left my Canon EOS Elan 7e and my 75-300mm USM lens in my

camera bag in the trunk of my car in the sun until about 2 pm. When

I opened the trunk it wasn't scorching hot but it was hot. I brought

the camera bag inside and when I opened it I could feel the heat. I

picked up the lens and it was hot but like I said it wasn't

scorching, same with the body. On a temperature scale of 1 to 10 I

would say when I picked up the equiptment it felt like a 6 or 7.

Does anyone think that it could of been damaged? I mean it is a

canon and canons, especialy the higher end EOS series are made to

withstand the extreme elements, correct? I was told that if you

leave your lenses in direct sunlight, (and this wasn't direct

sunlight on the camera bag), the glue inside the lenses starts to

melt and damages the lenses. But a pawnshop guy told me this, so

odds are he didn't know what he was talking about. Should I be

concerned? What heat damage would occur, and what would the symtoms

be? Should I take my equiptment into Canon and get them to look over

it or should I save my money? Thank you very much.

  4. Hello,

I have just recently puchased a 75-300mm and a 28-90mm lens for my

Elan 7E and need to know wether to buy UV or Skylight filter for

these lenses? I live in Key West and someone down here told me that

a Skylight filter would be better for this location because it gives

a slight reddish color to the shots. He also said not to buy the UV

filters because they give the pictures a slight yellowish tinge.

This guy has owned a camera store for 20 years and he is a very well

known professional photographer around here. Is he right or wrong?

What type of filters should I get for these lenses? I just want to

protect the lenses. I don't want to have any coloration added to my

    shots. Thank you!

  6. Hello,

I would like to know how long after film is exposed should it be

developed? How much picture quality does an exposed frame loose, in

say, one month after the shot has been taken? I ask this because

sometimes it will take me two or three months to use one roll of

film. Either because I will use half of the roll and then let my

camera sit for a month or two and then use the remaining shots, or

because I can switch rolls of film during mid-roll on my camera and

sometimes take advantage of this feature and let the half used roll

sit on the counter for a month or two, or even three months before I

    use the rest.

    Thank you, CHH

  9. Hello,

Can someone please tell me if cleaning a Canon EF lens to often will

damage the coating on the lens? What type of coatings are Canon EF

lenses made with anyways? I am currently using lens paper with lens

cleaning fluid, and then lens paper with condensation from hot

breath to finish the job. Is this the right way to clean these

lenses?, or should I be doing it a different way? It seems to work

great this way. What is more abrasive for cleaning Canon EF lenses,

lens paper or lens cleaning cloth?

    Thank you,

    CHH

  10. Hello,

I recently puchased a 75-300mm USM EF lens and was wondering what is

the better and safer cleaning material, paper or cloth. My educated

guess would be paper because a piece of the cleaning paper is always

clean where as a cleaning cloth just accumulates build-up over

time. Which is softer and less abrasive?

    Thank you,

  11. Hello,

I have a Canon Elan 7E question about my mirror in my camera body.

I'm not sure but I think there might be a fingerprint on my mirror.

I can't really see one but then again they are transparent and you

can only see them if you fog it up with hot air from your mouth. I

believe there is one on the mirror because I think one of my not so

intelligent friends touched the mirror, and they won't tell me if

they did or not, of course. I haven't fogged up the mirror yet so I

can see if there is one because I'm not sure if I should. Will

condensation on the mirror or focusing screen damage anything? If I

see a fingerprint on the mirror will that interfere with focusing,

metering, or reading light? Where is the best place to get the

mirror cleaned?, I'm thingking a Canon service center. Even if

Canon cleans it doesn't that damage the mirror even a bit? I was

told by someone that even if a professional cleans it it could

damage the reflective silver coating on the mirror, is this true?

Sorry, there is more than one question.

    Thank you,

    CHH

  12. Hello,

I was wondering if anybody knew how to advance the film in an Elan

7E with the lens cap on. I need to know how to do this because I

want to take the film out in mid roll with a leader left out so that

I can switch films without having to use all of the frames and so

that I can use the rest of the film at a later date by advancing the

film to the frame where I left off. I called Canon customer support

and they explained to me that it could be done using the creative

mode but the guy was rambling on and lost me after a few seconds.

Could someone please tell me how to do this?

    Thank you,

    CHH

  13. Hello,

I have a Elan 7E QD and have just begun taking shots of sunsets. I

know that your not supposed to take pictures of the sun when it is

strong, so how low on the horizon does the sun have to be before it

is it safe to point your camera at it? I am using a 75-300mm lens

so if the sun is strong the lens will act sort of like a magnified

glass and damage my shutter curtains and who knows what else,

right? With this lens could I damage the shutter curtains and light

metering if the sun is to strong? This is what I was told. How low

does the sun have to be on the horizon and even when it's low should

I only point the camera at the sunset when I release the shutter?

    Thanks,

    CHH

  14. Hello,

I am currently about to purchase a tripod. There are to that I'm

looking at, one is quite a bit heavier than the other one, but each

are of the same quality. Should I buy the heavier one or the

    lighter one?

  15. Hi,

I would like to know when it is time to take my camera to a Canon

dealership to get my mirror cleaned. How do I know when the light

metering and the auto focusing are being affected by the dust on the

mirror. Does the metering and focusing just not function all-

together or do these features start to loose functionality? What

    should I look for?

    Thanks,

    CHH

  16. Hello,

I recently noticed that there was some dust on the mirror in my Elan

7E. After I blew on the mirror it still remained. There isn't that

much dust but it's still visible. I know well enough not to touch

the mirror, even with the softest of cleaning materials. If I can't

blow the dust off with my mouth, should I just leave it at that. Or

will this small amount of dust affect auto focusing or the light

    metering even slightly?

    Thanks,

    CHH

  17. Hello,

I was wondering if anyone knows of a manufacturer that sells a

inexpensive underwater housing for an Elan 7E? By inexpensive I

mean less than $400. The cheapest one that I've seen was about

$550. I'm also wondering if you also need to buy a certain size

lens that will fit in the housing or do you have to buy the lens

part of the housing that fits your lens, (75-300mm), for example?

    Thank you.

  18. Hello,

I noticed my Elan 7 bodies shutter curtains have small gaps between

the shutter curtain blades, they don't lie perfectly flat on each

other. I just purchased the camera a few months ago so it is new.

Are all of the shutter curtains in the new Canon camera bodies like

this? Is it possible for light to enter through these gaps to the

film? Some people say to look at the prints to see if I see

streaks. But even if I don't see streaks and it still is possible

for the small quantity of light to effect the prints, how would I

know if it's the light leakage or my poor photographic skills? If I

get back a print that is blurry or poor quality how would I know if

it's me doing something wrong photographically or the light leakage.

I don't want to think that I'm doing something wrong when in fact

I'm not. Even if a minute amount of light is getting through the

shutter curtain by way of these gaps is unacceptable. I purchased a

Canon so I wouldn't have any problems. Can you please help me with

this, how can I be SURE that NO light is getting through these gaps

when it's not supposed to be?

    Thank you implicitly.

  19. Hello,

I recently purchased a 75-300 III USM lens and was wondering if it

is possible to use a lens hood and a lens filter at the same time?

Or can only one or the other be attached at one time?

    Thank you.

  20. Does anyone know how to stop the camera body from slipping and

pointing downward on the tripod head when the head is placed in a

vertical position for lengthwise shots? It seems that the weight of

my 75-300mm lens is to much for the body to hold without slipping on

the head. Is there some kind of accessory that I can buy that

prevents this from happening, or is there a home remedy that I can

use such as some kind of tape?

    Thanks,

    CHH

  21. Hi!

Recently while performing the flashlight test on my camera, (that is

while in a dark room, shining a flashlight into the mirror box with

no lens attached and the mirror locked up), I noticed that there is

a SLIGHT amount of light getting through the blades of the shutter

curtain when I look at the curtain from an angle or from the bottom

of the body. I need to know if this will affect my shots even the

    slightest bit.

    Thanks for your help!

  22. Hello, I am posting this question again because of the lack of

    responses.

Recently I was checking to see if there was any light getting

through the shutter curtains by performing the flashlight test.

Would shining that very bright light into that mirror chamber with

the mirror locked up damage the auto focusing or light metering

sensors? Or when the mirror is locked up, (Elan 7E), does that cover

these sensors up from light, and any possible damage?

Thank you, Christian H. Hunter shenyi@cogeco.ca

  23. Hello,

I have a question about using a tripod with a heavy lens. I have a

EOS Elan 7e body and a 75-300mm lens. I noticed that the bottom of

the camera body is plastic and the lens is pretty heavy. Because of

the weight of the lens and the plastic camera bottom can any damage

occur to the camera body if I mount it to a tripod with this heavy

lens? Is there not some sort of support adapter that I can buy that

attaches to the lens and tripod or camera body?

    Thank you,

    shenyi@cogeco.ca
