This was shot from a plane, on a journey from Ayers Rock to Sydney; not sure exactly

which part of Australia's central desert, aka "the outback." I could not believe how

beautiful the Earth looked from 35,000 feet up; and was glad that the plane's window

did not pose too much of a hindrance. The image has been cleaned up a bit, using

contrast and saturation - but what you see was pretty much the view from 7 miles

    up...comments?

    Hi Talal,

The light on the water (at left) does not match the setting/rising sun light on the clouds in the top left. This is a very dream-like photo, and looks magical...can you write about how you accomplished the look?

    Thanks,

    Rajesh

  1. I altered white balance for this picture - I think I chose the correction for fluorescent

light - which produced the violet glow for the clouds; it also resulted in a rosier sky. I

always struggle between photographing the authentic "as the eye sees it" version, vs.

the altered reality version pictured here...what do you think?

  2. Hi Christal,

Did you intentionally leave out the sky? Every other picture I've seen of Horseshoe Bend has at least a bit of sky in it, and including at least a sliver of the sky would have been my instinct as well. But in not including the sky, you got to keep the interesting rock formations in the foreground - not a bad trade off! A beautiful shot overall; I also agree with previous posters that the glare does detract a bit.

  3. You have so many great bird shots...this one is my favorite because it has so much simplicity to it...the colors are gorgeous, the bird seems to be looking for one last bite before retiring for the night...great work!

You've captured the pride these men take in their difficult work quite well! The monochromatic tone of much of the picture contrasts well with the reds...I love that these men are covered with grime, yet have the energy to smile. Great job!

    Las Vegas

I like this view of the Las Vegas Eiffel; on first inspection it was jarring, since I don't remember the Paris original having a building or bridge underneath! This angle also elongates the length and curve of the tower, giving it nice tension against the bright blue sky...nice work!
  4. Green sea turtles frequent the shallow reefs at Kahalu'u Beach, on the Big Island. I

dove right in, firing my camera at this dining (on sea algae) green sea turtle. The

underwater housing ended up damaging my digital camera...but I'll have this shot

    forever...

  5. I spotted rain clouds while returning from the summit of Sulphur Mountain, in Banff, AB,

Canada. I wondered whether to wait - my family was interested in getting down quickly - a

few minutes' wait brought the clouds, their rain and sun rays poking through to the

mountains across the valley. It was amazing to see the interplay between the light, rain and

the topography of the Canadian Rockies, as well as the rivers / lakes shining below. There is

    a God!

    The Suffering

After recent events in Iraq, I couldn't help but think of charred bodies in a war zone. Very powerfully done; never thought mannequins could lend such gravity to a photo.

Steven, how did you get the background to be so perfectly black? I love the contrast between the blackness and the subtle hues of the petals, crowned by the central bright yellow - very nice execution!
