People are actually rating the subject and not the photographer.
With due regards to high ratings, I see nothing special in this photo except the striking coloration of the subject, which isn't due to the photographer's skills.
As a photograph, it has some focusing plane problems (if you look at the middle leg in the foreground), the composition could be vastly better and the sharpness is there but nothing earth-shattering.

Excelleint lighting. Did you leave space on the top for printing the magazine name? ;-)
Well done ...
-
Wow. Lovely composition and colors.
-
This is an work of art, quite different from the 100s of extreme macros floating around the world. Superbly done. The composition alone leaves little to be desired.

Mystical, ideal setting for a fairytale :-)
Not sure if including the foreground in some way could be better or not ...

I commented on this as a photograph, not on the quality of digitization. In that regard it can considerably improve ... e.g. the noisy(?) black hair and the washed out sky in the background. I still find it attractive as a photograph. Not too common these days to come across unposed, natural portraits of people with a friendly smile. Again -- this does well even without eye contact.

Hello. Your efforts are very good but the digitization can be improved a lot. The images are low contrast and lack sharpness. Are you scanning from prints? Try scanning from the negative using a good film scanner and adjust the contrast in Photoshop using curves. The shots will look a lot better.

I can't complement you enough on your portraiture skills Richard. Another very nice shot. I can see you're able to make your subjects quite comfortable before the lens to get such natural expressions.
Happy new year to you and glad to see you back after a long time.

Much better than similar shots found in abundance, in terms of composition (except cut-off front legs), clarity and lighting.
-
Eh. Didn't see that before. Terrific.
Hang on to your N80. I too am coming back to "mostly film" status soon.
-
Should have gotten far better ratings. Well done.
-
Very creative. I like it.
-
Very tongue-in-cheek :-)
-
Excellent composition and captured at just the right moment.
-
This is breathtaking. Wonderful way to welcome the new year.
-
Takes a last-minute turn from being a cliche -- just because of the dramatic backdrop. Very well done.
-
Exceptionally well captured. They stay like that for very brief periods of time ...
-
This is of very high aesthetic quality. This is an work of art -- far superior to the common highly rated run-of-the-mill closeups.

Now that's one landscape I'd love to hang on my wall. Well done.

This is the one I like best in your portfolio. It would be perfect if there was a foreground rock to accentuate the WA effect. That notwithstanding, I'd very happily hang it on my wall ....
-
You've done full justice to a beautiful subject! Nicely captured and chosen plane of focus is just right.
If I really looked for faults I'd say the composition could be better with the butterfly's head pointing to the top-right (not the bottom-right) corner. But you'd probably have missed the shot altogether if you tried to do that.
BTW, this is one handheld closeup shot that worked really well ...
-
Surreal .. slightly spooky! Excellent!
BTW at the bottom left part -- there's either a dust spec on your CCD or a frog in the water ;-)
