People are actually rating the subject and not the photographer.

With due regards to high ratings, I see nothing special in this photo except the striking coloration of the subject, which isn't due to the photographer's skills.

As a photograph, it has some focusing plane problems (if you look at the middle leg in the foreground), the composition could be vastly better and the sharpness is there but nothing earth-shattering.

This is an work of art, quite different from the 100s of extreme macros floating around the world. Superbly done. The composition alone leaves little to be desired.

I commented on this as a photograph, not on the quality of digitization. In that regard it can considerably improve ... e.g. the noisy(?) black hair and the washed out sky in the background. I still find it attractive as a photograph. Not too common these days to come across unposed, natural portraits of people with a friendly smile. Again -- this does well even without eye contact.

I can't complement you enough on your portraiture skills Richard. Another very nice shot. I can see you're able to make your subjects quite comfortable before the lens to get such natural expressions.

Happy new year to you and glad to see you back after a long time.

This is the one I like best in your portfolio. It would be perfect if there was a foreground rock to accentuate the WA effect. That notwithstanding, I'd very happily hang it on my wall ....
  1. You've done full justice to a beautiful subject! Nicely captured and chosen plane of focus is just right.

If I really looked for faults I'd say the composition could be better with the butterfly's head pointing to the top-right (not the bottom-right) corner. But you'd probably have missed the shot altogether if you tried to do that.

BTW, this is one handheld closeup shot that worked really well ...
