Geez. You guys sound as if this were a wake or something.
Where should I send the flowers?
-
Actually, Todd, the Oskar Barnack Award & the Leica Medal of
Excellence are pretty prestigious. This is not some
send-in-your-best-baby-photo type contest. The winners are
some of the best working photographers in
documentary/photojournalism. Past winners have included
James Natchwey, Paolo Pellegrin, and Antonin Kratockhvil.

Have you tried sending a query to Magnum?

Right. Send Magnum a note and I'm sure at their next annual
meeting, they'll compile a list of cameras/lens/film/develper that
each photographer uses.

And while you're at the NPR site, you can listen to another piece
about Smith's ill-fated Pittsburgh project:

http://discover.npr.org/features/feature.jhtml?wfId=1035851

Actually, if you type in "Photography" or "Photographer" in the
NPR search engine you get a lot of good stories on
photographers from Helen Leavitt to the so-called "Bang Bang
Club" in South Africa to Diane Arbus. It's well worth some time to
listen to the NPR archives...

NPR had a piece on Smith and the photos when that article was
published. You can listen to it here:

I guess I got lucky with my purchase. I placed my order and
received it two days later.

Marc, the military doesn't need that kind of knowledge. That's
what CNN is for.

I'm waiting for my Iraqi flag M7.

Talk about six degrees of separation. Next year, you should invite
HCB to Thanksgiving dinner.

I heard that the documentary is scheduled to air on cable
(Showtime or HBO) at some point in 2003.

modern plastic SLR

That modern, plastic camera (the high-end Canon EOS models)
can take more bumps, bruises, rain, etc. in the field than the M or
the R can.

At any rate, "War Photographer" is an excellent documentary,
though it doesn't really go in-depth as to Natchwey himself. A
must-see though.

through simple lack of cultivation among those in the
American backwater.

Oh, please tell us how we in American can be as cultivated as
you, Michael. Once we've seen the light, maybe we can aspire to
your levels of art and intellect.

I couldn't care less about special edition cameras. But if it
contributes to Leica's bottom line, then let 'em churn out as many
as they want. We all laugh at these cameras, but I would bet that
a number of people who frequent this board probably own
some, and they are sititng in presentation cases as we speak.
You know who you are...

I guess I've been lucky. I picked up a mint M6 a number of years
back for $1000. Check out this PDF article from the Leica
Historical Society: Leica
Photography For Under A Grand. It might be of some use.

Good to know, Albert. Nice tip. But why even shoot from the
chest? Just pick up the camera and look through the viewfinder. I
don't understand a lot of people's desire to hide what you are
doing. You're a photographer. This is what you do. With street
shooting, people always get too scared (hence the large number
of photos of backs of people's heads).

Let me get out the shovel...
-
I would bet that he would prefer to called a p"hotographer who
uses a Leica", as opposed to a "Leica photographer".

account services brown noser

Marc, having worked in the ad industry for a while, I had to
chuckle at this description!

You guys need to stop showing me examples of photos taken
with this lens. It's making my wallet very itchy!
-
To look cool. Multiple Leica's hanging around your neck look
better than just one. ;-)
-
Thanks, guys. I found it. It's stamped on the lens. But I didn't see
it until I took the lens off the camera. Why didn't I think of that?
Duh.

I need to register my 16-35 lens with my insurance company and
they need the serial number. The Canon warranty card has a
"Body No." section that lists a five digit number. Is this the serial
number? Or is it obvious and I've missed it?

I live in New York City and feel a little insecure on the streets.

Where do you live? Bed-Stuy? Bushwick? NYC is hardly sketchy.
I walk around everywhere with an M6 around my shoulder.
Regardless, I have a rider on my renter's insurance. Look in the
phonebook and give AllState or State Farm a call, they should be
able to give you a quote.

To get an ü on the Mac, type option & u at the same time and
then u. Easy.

Well, I'll be damned. I guess these guys are still around and are
going to unveil a product at Photokina. Here's a news story about it (dated Sept 19, 2002).
Though given their track record, I wouldn't hold your breath.

As a matter of fact, I love Jack's contributions. I'm a member of
some other lists that he contributes too and he is a valued
member of those forums, too. Perhaps I should have put a
smiley face on my original post or something. I meant no harm. I
was kind of poking fun at the fact that you guys are making it
sound as though he died or something. Lighten up.
