  1. There are also supposedly leaked press photos of the camera at places like Nikon Rumors (which has led to the frenzy of speculation about a possible hybrid EVF).
  2. For the record, the zoom feel on my Nikon 24-70 is fine, neither loose nor stiff. I did actually look at some secondhand copies of this lens at Calumet, and the price was high for what looked like 'well-loved' condition. Got a good deal on some Fuji film, though.
  3. I looked into this before buying mine, and didn't find a specific serial number range. Most of the problems you see described online seem to date back several years (especially issues with internal screws coming loose and jamming the zoom), but there are some more recent reports too. I suspect none of them are immune. On the other hand, as with most of these issues, probably only a small proportion are affected. It might be best to avoid storing it horizontally for long periods with the heavy barrel not fully supported (e.g. with the hood fitted, which will raise it at one end) - 'zoom sag' leading to internal distortion has been suggested as one culprit (mine sits vertically in its case when not in use). I don't know what the current situation is with fixing it under warranty - there are mixed reports about Nikon attributing this to 'impact damage' (it may depend on your local service centre). Since the UK warranty is pretty short anyway, I went with secondhand and checked the zoom action (and the filter ring, which can also apparently become loose) pretty carefully. For landscape I might go with something quite different (maybe a set of primes).
  4. My guess (more speculation!) is the hardware is already finished, and there'll be a real announcement in the Autumn (if the timing of the 'in development' statement about the D5 is anything to go by - see above). On reflection, they aren't going to want to depress the sales of the D810 (and to some extent the D500 and D750) for too long, even to make an anniversary announcement. Few people who can afford to wait will be buying the D810 now (unless there's a significant price cut) - they'll either want the new model or a better deal on the old one.
  5. The various 8K resolutions are over 33MP - see: 8K resolution - Wikipedia. It doesn't seem likely the D850 will be able to handle that much data in real time at video fps, which is probably why they emphasise time lapse photography. The dancing video made my day!
  6. Some people ask for over £100 GBP on ebay for fake Luftwaffe 'Leicas' (Zorkis or FEDs), which are generally sold openly as 'copies'. I don't know how many they sell - a serviced, unmodified version with the original Soviet engravings and intact chrome plating can be found for half that. They are interesting cameras in their own right, made as close but honest copies of contemporary Leica screwmount bodies (the USSR wasn't too bothered about patents). For comparison, the (real) Leica originals start at under £200, but that's usually just the body. Luftwaffe versions start at about £800 and rise into the thousands, especially if you have a lens with military engravings.
  7. Yes, but the video couldn't be 8K anyway, unless Nikon is actually launching an 8K video camera, which doesn't seem likely - the bit at the beginning looks like live video, not stop motion. The text near the end says '8K time-lapse', so the starry night stuff has been down-sampled if it was shot at full resolution.
  8. The general appearance is usually enough to say it's a fake (as you suspected), but the links give some of the specifics (e.g. the front viewfinder window and the curve of the front of the top plate are all wrong). Occasionally we see real Leicas with the chrome stripped down to the brass, but not in combination with 'Luftwaffe' markings! A real Luftwaffe Leica would usually be in chrome or grey finish. Gold-plated 'Luxus' Leicas, also exist, and are very rare and expensive. The faker has made something a bit like both of these, in the hope of making it look collectible. I hope nobody paid a lot for it - some people do collect them as curiosities, but they are only worth a fraction of the price of an ordinary Leica, let alone one with military markings or a gold finish.
  9. Totally fake. It's a Soviet camera with the chrome stripped off and fake engravings. How to Spot a Fake Leica Barnack Leica: true or fake? A comprehensive guide - Johan N. Kuiper | fotograaf in Assen How to tell a fake Leica from a real one. Leica Fake Russian Fake Leicas
  10. Shouldn't think so, but the timelapse thing suggests they have enough pixels horizontally to give us 8K stills in a standard 16:9 crop. Something like the 42MP Sony sensor would do that (the 36MP sensor in the D800/D810 falls a bit short).
  11. Actually it might not be as bad as that - I see now that Nikon announced it was 'developing' the D5 in Nov 2015, launched it the following January, and started to get it in the shops in March. So perhaps we will be able to buy it by Christmas.
  12. Mike, you cynic! The 8k astrophotography time lapse community must be thinking all their Christmases have come at once! Or will be. Possibly after Christmas.
  13. Finally a true successor to the D700, fast enough for sports with sufficient FX resolution for everything else? The pre-announcement is odd, though. The details are vague enough for the 'Osborne Effect' to hurt sales of the D810, D750 and D500. Maybe there was intense corporate pressure to announce something today, or perhaps development is behind the original schedule? I can't remember the last time they did this with a dSLR - was it the D70? Any bets on the launch date? In the shops for Christmas or early 2018?
  14. They're even more historical now, 12 years after the original post.
  15. The Fuji X series cameras have great high ISO, and you can spend the remainder on your new arrival's college fund :)
  16. This is going to put a big dent in the value of any camera that doesn't already have the new sensor: CCD sensors of the Leica M9 / M9-P / M Monochrom and M-E camera models // 2017 // Global // Leica News // World of Leica - Leica Camera AG
  17. This guy found it doesn't lock when mounted on an M4, and is a tight fit on other bodies. Supposedly the M4 locking problem will be fixed in the September batch:
  18. This is debated endlessly, and never resolved. Some people say that you should never compromise a high quality lens with an unnecessary filter, and that lens hoods usually provide better protection against impact. Others say they see no significant degradation in image quality, that hoods don't protect the lens from wind-blown grit or rain, and it's better to clean a filter frequently rather than a lens. In either case, filtering UV isn't really necessary with digital sensors, so it boils down to whether you think you need protection or not. I would say it's always useful to have a protective filter available (you might want to shoot in driving rain or very dusty conditions), but it's a judgement call as to whether you use it routinely or rarely. Perhaps the biggest issue with filters is the possibility of adding flare in certain situations (e.g. when shooting into the light or getting a shot of city lights at night). Then it may be wise to remove the filter even if you are a routine user. If you do decide to use a filter, get one made from high quality glass with good multicoating (which reduces flare substantially) and ideally an 'easy clean' layer. I would suggest B+W MRC or MRC Nano, Hoya HD, or Hoya Fusion/Evo. If the one that came with your lens is an off-brand filter, or even an uncoated B+W or Hoya, I would trade up to something better.

  20. Micro SD is, so far, the only format I've had trouble with. I noticed my mp3 player was starting to get warm and the battery was draining very quickly. Eventually it stopped reading the card (which was also at that point unreadable in an external reader). It now runs cool with normal battery life on its internal memory - not sure whether to blame the card or the gadget, or whether to risk another (128Gb) card in the same device.

  22. Of course there are strong arguments for having XQD or some other format that can maximise the speed of your camera when necessary. But as things stand I'm less convinced there should be dual XQD slots in the second tier bodies, especially when the future of the format must now be in doubt. If you are (e.g.) a professional sports shooter, you probably regard instant backup of high fps shooting as a big deal, as insurance against the (rather unlikely but potentially career limiting) event of the primary card failing before you can unload it. Your camera is probably the D5 dual XQD. For many others the flexibility of also being able to use a ubiquitous media format that can be found cheaply where you shop for groceries is more valuable. The tradeoff isn't speed (you still have one fast media slot), it's the lack of an instant backup in situations where you want to make full use of that speed. I don't think anybody knows yet. Hopefully this will be the case, but I guess it's also possible the situation will be more like SD/SDHC/SDXC, where cameras built for the newer format can use the older media, but new cards won't work in old cameras.
  23. I think MTC must be a rogue moderator - the VC meter thread was also just bumped in the Leica forum :-) I suppose mounting a small meter on the camera makes sense just to avoid juggling meter and camera, plus I think hanging one around your neck is only allowed if you also have one of those special photographer's waistcoats with dozens of little pockets to complete the look.
  24. I guess the VC meters are even harder to find for a reasonable price now than they were 10 years ago when this thread started! Is anyone using the Gossen Digisix as a shoe-mounted meter? It;s not as pretty as the VC, but it's more functional. The infamous Mr Rockwell has a nice description: Gossen Digisix
