I've never been a Diane Arbus fan, but will occasionally find interest in a shot. Somehow this is reminiscent, only better. It is odd where it is framed with the hands not visible. It creates a strange kind of tension. I have no idea how to rate an image like this. In some ways it is simplistically brilliant, in others it oddly ordinary. Somehow a shot that could end up in a gallery or overlooked and found in a waste bin. For that alone the originality is a 7. Aesthetically??? This might actually be one of the longest I've stared at a seemingly straightforward image. Regards, J.

Very thought provoking journalism. The willingness to shoot this is commendable and worth high originality marks. The child is wonderfully rendered, and the sense of motion well caught. I think the image would have been even more powerful using a longer focal length and eliminating the bicycles in combiation with a horizontal composition. J.

I don't believe the subdued light effect on this ones works well. I agree with Colin about the hand. The area around the mouth and nose is lit very well and of acceptable sharpness. The lighting on the eyes is just a bit too withdrawn. J.

Creative and effective. This is something worth trying. I love the model. J.

Great use of empty space in a portrait. You hear that Marc? Nice contrast between the extreme tones. The key here is sharpness, which is excellent even in the far eye. Regards, J.

The guy is perfect. Could use just a bit more contrast, but that is a minor point. I never look for your work, it seems to look for me. Regards, J.

So many people here look but do not rate or comment. You posted this elsewhere the other day and received a great deal of attention. You gotta admit this place is like a ghost town. Once again, gorgeous work. The detail is superb. Your studio work is commendable. Regards, J.

This portrait has a nice expression and crop. It is very soft, and if this was done intentionally it makes no difference, because it doesn't benefit the image. The levels and curves also needd to be adjusted. At present it is somewhat muddy. It would benefit from being crisp and it would still retain the mood. J.

This is a terrific shot. Some of you people need to get a grip. This site has some of the snobiest, holier than thou individuals I have come across. I would have shot this shot, right up on him and hopede for similar quality. It is a beautiful image. Compelling, and thought provoking. You have no idea what happened before or after the shot. I have travelled all over the world, and kids like this are everywhere. We live in a hard, hard world. I normally talk to and pay my models, and for all we know, that is exactly what happened here. If it didn't it still brings the message to the table. The flowers, butterflies, soft focus portraits, and over-rated cliquish photos on the front page are not in this league. I feel like telling you to kiss my you-know-what and it ain't even my image. Who cares what else this guy shot. This work stands on its own.

The image is shot in nice light, but is soft in a way that I think detracts from the overall aesthetic, especially in the eyes. The thumbnail is inviting and I think looks better than the larger image. The thumb looks very good.

Very beautiful setup. I like the desaturated look and the toning you've chosen. Well done. J.

Great shot. I cannot believe that I am the first to comment. The image could use a levels adjustment, but that's about it. Look at that face, and that composition. Extremely well done. J.

Very clever. Can you do something with "Blackest Eyes". J.

I will unashamedly steal many ideas from this image. I have always liked the adult expressions we capture in children. The only negative is the crop at the bottom, the toes seem cramped. The face is superb. J.

I've been this person, more than once. Nice work. J.

I knew this would rate high if reposted. Still love the shot. ps You may be the first to ever take my advice. J.

I wonder. If it is, it would be a beautiful print. Neither the rectangle nor the ps texture have appeal for me in this image. The lighting and pose are excellent, but I find myself wanting more space to the left. J.

Are all you Scandinavians excellent photographers? This one has wonderful texture and balance. J.

Composition is outstanding. Model is close to perfect. I feel it needs just a bit more detail in the lower back. The choice of film is interesting. I wonder what this would have looked like with Delta 400. J.

This is Pops. Eugene is mellow. Pops is intense. My favorite shot of
pops is in the horizontal folder.

This image is bound for the top-rated pages. I feel it is a bit too heavily weighted at the bottom, particularly because the head is cropped, which is something I do with regularity. Cropping slightly may improve the compositional balance. Color balance and exposure are wonderful. Eyes appear to be tack. Great model, great photo. J.
