Nice Brad! Always enjoy a good, random, Dan Rather-related quip...

Thank you all for your insight.
Chris, I am familiar with the 120/620 modifications though I appreciate your offer to provide more insight.
Patrick and Ivan, thanks for your thoughts. I appreciate Ivan's comments on a beginner level, but I also value Patrick's quest for accurate information. If others find this thread in the future it will only be of value if the info is accurate.
Jeffrey, I appreciate the link to the unblinkingeye.com, too. Lots of info there!

As it relates to search engines, maybe another Samantha Bender will become interested in photography. Believe it or not, there are two Steve Binghams here on photo.net and we're not related in any way. The 'other' Steve Bingham is more well known, as his portfolio is fairly extensive (or was at one time). There's a degree of search engine anonymity in having more than one person sharing your name!
Good luck with your client. Hope things work out for you.

I recently acquired an old Pho-tak Reflex II camera (fixed lens TLR)
that shoots 620 film. It cleaned up nicely, and though I'm not
expecting much, I'm wanting to put a roll or two through it to see
what it can do.
Searching for 620 film, an old thread referred me to J & C Camera.
They sell 620, and in the description mention that the film looks
great in pyro (and specifically Pyrocat) developer.
What is pyro developer, and how does it differ from what is usually
discussed here? We see lots of references to HC-110, DD-X, Rodinal,
etc., but this was new to me. A quick search of photo.net revealed
threads, but none specifically answered my question.
Finally, would 620 truely look better in a pyro developer? I'm up for
trying new things, but am most experienced with Ilford DD-X. Any
advice would be appreciated.

Jason, you don't mention where you develop your film. If it is in the bathroom, running a hot shower for a few minutes as Guy mentioned above is indeed very helpful. It steams up the room, trapping the dust particles which then don't get on your wet emulsions as you move around the room.
Ideally, we could work in a dust-free environment, but the truth is not many of us have access to such. If you work in a bathroom, the steam trick is valuable for clean negatives. Good luck!

Congratualations Ivan! You're right - it is freakin' awesome! I haven't been developing my own stuff for too long, but it is still fun to open the canister and see those rolls of negatives turn out OK. Glad you had a good experience.
Once you master the process you can start trying all the variations you see mentioned here on the forum!

Hey Anthony - I, too, am glad to hear that your family is OK. There's nothing like a disaster (fire, flood, etc.) to make us re-prioritize and give perspective on what is really important. That said, I'm glad the Leicas made it through too.
As Marc noted above, I hope you consider renter's insurance. My brother in Chicago doesn't have it, and I'm sure one day a neighbor's heater or something is going to go wrong and there will a similar story to yours. The way I view renter's insurance (vs. some other insurance) is that it's mostly to protect you from all the morons who live near you!
Good luck!

Russ - Thanks for setting up an online gallery for those of us that can't make the show. As Todd noted, the first two photos here are really good. I studied the second photo for a lot longer than usual. Very nice!!
Congratulations on the show! Hope it's successful.

...you may want to visit the Nelson-Atkins Museum here. According to
today's Kansas City Star the museum has aquired the entire Hallmark
Photographic Collection, "considered one of the finest photography
collections in the country."<br><br>
The collection has a lot of material. According the Star, "Besides its
broad scope, the collection is distinguished by its in-depth holdings
of famous photographers, including 230 photos by Andre Kertesz and
about 90 by Dorothea Lange. It was begun in 1964 with Hallmarkメs
purchase of 141 photographs by Harry Callahan."<BR><BR>
One of the things I want to see in person is the first-generation
print of モMigrant Motherヤ by Dorothea Lange.<Br><br>
Some wouldn't consider KC as a hotbed of culture, but this may be
worth a trip if you find yourself here on business or pleasure...

The entire story is on the KC Star site <a

Rene - I like your first one especially. My wife would likely give me a similar look and follow it with asking me ever so kindly to put down the friggin' camera and help her with something!
-
Monkey - Great photos. The rearing elephant is really dramatic!
Roger - I love the cat vs. ferret photos! I can imagine a series in production now on Comedy Central involving just such a scenario...

Hey Dave - Sorry to hear about the stolen gear. While it's just 'stuff' it sure can deliver a blow to one's faith in fellow man. An expensive weekend, huh?!
One thing I haven't seen posted while skimming the responses is to check eBay beginning later this week. I know of several cases where stolen gear appeared online for auction. Some thieves are smart and wait a period of time before trying to cash in, but some aren't so bright. If you see something interesting, you might try using the eBay 'ask the seller a question' feature and inquire as to the serial number for 'research'. With any luck, they might just send it.
Good luck in any case!!

First I'd try to bargin, but if those were truly the only two choices I'd go for the 21mm. I'd rather the choice be 25, but I'd learn to live with it...

Occasional poster from Kansas City, MO. I'm pleased to see there's two of us from KC on p.net. Matt often has to wave the flag for Missouri, but he's in Columbia (as he pointed out), and who knows for how much longer?!
Hey Matt, maybe you need to come over for a helping of Gates before you head to Korea!
-
Wow! Spent some time thinking about this, huh Jeremy?! I do like my Domke 802 Reporter's Satchel. It would meet many of your requirements, but certainly not all:<br>
<bl>
<li>holds rangefinder with lens
<li>holds SLR with lens
<li>sandwiches and water bottle with ease
<li>map, book, wallet, other pocket items
<li>canvas construction
<li>does have full length flap, unweighted, with metal clasp
<li>fairly flat profile
<li>no studs for 'feet'
<li>has briefcase handle
</bl>
<br>
It certainly isn't perfect. I wish the shoulder strap was detachable. It might be heavier than you prefer, though I don't find the weight disagreeable.<br><br>
I concur with Vivek: Huw should custom make one for you. (Then sell to the rest of us too, though it will probably cost too much!)
-
Reina - Love your holiday card. Very nice!!
Jeff - Yours is very proper for Christmas evening. After dealing with family and chaos all day, one needs a drink!
-
Matt - Not stalking, but that looks like BlueStem in Columbia. I love that shop - my wife and I stop in whenever we're in town... Nice pic!
-
Claude - Depending on your photographic goals, the coast in February will likely offer interesting opportunities. Could you give us an idea of the type of opportunities you're seeking?<br><br>
Check out <a href="http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=00DbIH">this thread</a> for a couple of suggestions I posted. Probably too long to copy here...<br><br>
If you want recommendations on restaurants, especially on St. Simons or Jekyll Islands, let me know.<br><br>
Hope you have a great visit!
-
Good luck to both of you Matt! I look forward to seeing Seoul through your eyes. I'm sure I'll enjoy it as much as I've enjoyed Mike Dixon's postings. (And I understand about too much time in Columbia!)
-
Leaving Columbia, eh?! Will your girlfriend be moving too? What will you do for a model if not!?
-
Bob X - Forumla is the legendary place of happy forums. Kinda like Shangri-La for forums. ;-)
-
Of course, it could be Eric's name too. Tough to tell... I'm sure Grant can help one of you fellows out...
The wife wouldn't have believed me if I told her I was watching the Victoria's Secret fashion show to see Grant in the pit. Pity.
-
Can't be sure, but I swear the To/From tag on the third model from the right in Grant's picture has Peter A's name on it. So where does he collect his prize??! 8-)
-
Rene - I'm just a Yank taking a shot in the dark, but I'm guessing it's what you and I refer to as sunglasses. I'm sure someone will confirm/deny soon enough...
Hotels in San Francisco
in Leica and Rangefinders
Posted
Hey David - When my wife and I were in SF Labor Day weekend 2003 we stayed at the Stanford Court Renaissance Hotel. We Pricelined the area and got that hotel for $75/night. Really unbelievable. It is at the corner of California and Powell streets which is where the North/South and East/West cable cars cross. We just had to leave our room and hop any car. Great location! I'd recommend Pricelining a hotel in the Nob Hill area and see what pops up...
Good luck!
