    Hatchet job

I'm not too sure what the symbolism is supposed to be but I like the tones and composition. Is it a false perspective or does the heavy piano leg only seem to have the keyboard about one foot above the ground?

This photo is certainly different. At f/11 and with a 55mm focal length the bird must only have been a few feet away from the camera to get such an out of focus background. The bird (and you) must have been high up to have the background so continuously at the same amount of out of focus. I think that rather strange looking effect of the background detracts from rather than adds to the subject, the bird. People generally look at a photo the same way that they read, from top left to bottom right. People are seeing all that background before they see the bird. Holding this up to a mirror I can see the result you would get by "flipping the negative". I think that looks much better but then I am more of a traditionalist.
  1. It certainly makes for an interesting abstract. I think the tones are very well done. I would be interested in seeing how the lighting was done as it seems to be the same for all rooms. I would assume it was from equal size windows on the walls.

This is an excellent example of why little boys hate being forced into wedding parties. Clothes that don't fit and then everyone saying, "Oh, isn't he cute!" when you know those comments are engendered by how ridiculous you look. Very nice capture.

Very nice and ethereal. I thought it may be a better composition if you "flipped the negative" but I tried it and this looks better as it is.

The color and brightness are magnificent. I think the composition is fine the way it is. The distant birds flying out to the left frame are balanced by the closer birds flying in from the right frame.

I assume you had credentials so you could get to ringside and shoot between the bottom ropes. Boxing needs the grittiness of black and white photos. Very good job.

I like the editing that John did. Whenever I see a blue-ish cast such as in the original photo I think that the photographer didn't understand white balance.

    The Reflection

Most reflection attempts strive to have the reflection as sharp and clear as the subject being reflected. The backgrounds of the two elements in this photo are also different. The out of focus elements in the top background also look a bit odd, close to being called bad bokeh. The horizontal cement element looks to be very sharp but the rock on top is just starting to slip out of focus. A shorter focal length lens, one giving greater depth of field may have worked better here.

This is a nice photo of rocks, bushes and water. There is no main element to grab the viewer's attention but in this instance I don't think that is needed.

Very nicely and cleverly done. All the elements seem to be in proportion and fit together. There does seem to be some grayish overall veiling or else that is just my imagination. At any rate it does add to the overall mood better than the use of more contrast or saturation would do.

I think I would try to bring up the color a little bit more and crop about one inch off the left side and bottom to keep the aspect ratio but get rid of the distracting concrete structures. That was a good shutter speed to be fast enough to partially freeze the water motion and not too slow as to make the water look like milk.
  2. That is a brilliantly lit sky. With a print one would think that there was a light behind the print shining through. The pedestrian crosswalk sign does not show up that well. A bit of lightening on that might help.

    Magazine

I know that is your photo and the model, Helen, is one you use. The complimentary colors are very nice. Did you make up the magazine cover or is that a photo of the magazine cover?

I have to admit that the more I come back to this photo the more captivating I find it. Initially, my eye would first be immediately drawn to the strange background. Once I got over that, I can appreciate the image of the tiger first and how the background enhances it.

    "Perhaps a bit too much?"

Perhaps. When I first look at this photo I think, "Geez, that's weird." A longer look makes me appreciate the sharpness on the tiger. I don't know what the original looked like so I don't know how distracting it could have been. Maybe darkening the background down instead would have been better.

That is certainly different and interesting. The brightness of the circle of light around the eye from the 6 to 9 o'clock position somehow gives a distorted look. Still, it is a very imaginative set up.
