Well done.  Was this an exposure and processing challenge?  I know this may be a stupid question, but I think this scene would have challenged me.

Wayne - I try to think about how to process an image minimally and I don't always go the same route. Since you are familiar with manual blending you would appreciate how I processed this one.

My primary concern was the top left which was the brightest area. If I was working with a D810 instead of a D300, perhaps I would not have the same concern.

I took a single original Raw image  and brought that from lightroom into photoshop CS5. I went back to Lightroom and adjusted the same image so that the rest of the image (except the top left) looked good.  I brought that into PS. Copied that and made a layer over the original image. I then brought out the top left from the original.

Perhaps this could have been all done in Lightroom but I decided to go this route for better or for worse.

Not for this one but for a number of fog images at this location, I took 3 bracketed images  when my histogram told me that I had exceeded my dynamic range capabilities and a GND density filter would not help me. I had sacrificed too much time, money to get to this place and I did not want to blow it with exposure problems.

Hope this answers your question.

Wow, Tony, I think you have way too much time on your hands (lol) but the result was worth it. Of course this remark comes from a guy who spends half his life at a keyboard fiddling with his pictures.

Thanks, Tony.  Good to know my mind wasn't playing tricks on me and this was an impressive piece of serious work.  Again, excellent.

Very nice misty photo! I also have a foggy one, but of course not real fog, ha!

And, yes, the top left corner gives life to it!

Best regards, Tony!

A delicate, minimalist image, with the bare essentials superbly strung together. My only suggestion (for an alternative image) would be to elongate that horizontal line a shade by trimming from the top and the bottom, always a difficult thing to do when you know you are cropping out good stuff, but I think the result might be worth it. BTW, I would love to be let loose on those foreground reeds, especially in that light. All the best.

Thanks for the suggestions for a 2nd image - I like it.

For a 3rd image I could see those reeds disappearing. When I started shooting there was no color in the sky. I was quite pleased to see some color appear so I grabbed the shot without paying attention where the color was appearing on the water. I am trying to imagine no reeds there in this photo and I am thinking that it might be 'too empty" but this is an academic exercise since nothing can be done about it now.

All the very best,

This is an exceptionally , beautiful fall scenery well captured. We like the reeds with this slight "tan-ish" hue, also it follows the rule of thirds roughly, giving a balanced feeling.

Nice capture Tony but I think the detail in the LLH corner is distracting and agree with cropping it horizontally out. For a totally minimalist image, cropping out the sky detail in the ULH corner would still present an image that could stand on its own. A lot of times less is more.

It's funny but before I even read your title I wanted to just stay quiet when viewing this image; a hush came over me and I didn't want to speak! I'm sorry if that sounds corny and I find myself refraining from stating the emotional response that some photographs give me but I couldn't this time...  Beautiful work! Thank you for sharing. :)

Gregory and Verena, David, Richard, Kenneth, Trisha - many thanks for your visits and all of the very kind and constructive comments.  Comments with suggestions are in my humble opinion, rare these days at PN. So I must be thankful when I get comments like the ones here. I think that it was Trisha who advised me quite a while ago that it really comes down to the artists choice. In this case, I like the two versions and would be prepared to print both and where space is available, hang them on my wall.

many thanks again

Trisha - with your reaction to this image, I must desperately search for a similar one which I have not shared as yet.

You've had a good run on these lake in the fall series of photos.  I like just about all of them.  I specially like the subtle colors that appear high in the clouds in this one.

Hi Tony, I love your PP and treatment you gave to this image, but what was most appealing to me was the colors you got. I love it. Thanks for sharing and explaining how you did it. :)

Warmest regards,

LuDa

I must have missed this one (no pun intended with the word missed  "mist" : - )

But better late than never, this is really beautiful, I love the subtlety of the colours and the gradually reduced visibility, it has all the atmosphere and serenity of a water side dawn.

 Excellent!
