The Nuremberg Castle and the city walls were one of Europe’s most formidable medieval fortifications.

Our guide walked us through what it was like for an invader attempting to breach the castle – such as crossing a deep moat, and going through passages designed to make you targets for arrows, stones, fire balls and even excrement hurled from above. (The incline walk was enough to stop me.) When we visited there was a lot of construction and maintenance happening – workers, trucks, trenches being dug, etc. It gave me an excuse to do some reconstruction of my own to take my image back to another era.
