I found myself on a unfamiliar road when the snow started falling, I wasn't going to

stop as there was quite a journey ahead, but then I spotted this bleak little island and

couldn't resist a few shots. Your thoughts and comments are always appreciated.

Thank You.

Hi Alf -

A delicate, atmospheric, and ethereal landscape.

That island would be a fine place to have lunch!

Take care out there,

David

The larger view is awesome Alf. The excellent contrast of the island colors to all the white and gray tones around it is what caught my eye. Well worth the stop in your journey to make this image.

Nice simplistic, artistic image ALF, the smattering of color works well for this piece, the mountain as a backdrop....wonderful

Alf, I like it! Particularly attractive is the contrast between the green island the rest of the monochrome image. Since you are posting this, I assume you didn't get stuck in the snow...

Alf, this is very appealing.  A tiny island of Eden surrounded by a stark landscape.  Well done!

I think the 8 second exposure added to the surreal quality of the shot.

Sincere Thanks

I think lunch would have to be something warm : - )

The snow was falling at this point but it is hidden by the long exposure. I was balancing a umbrella (to keep the snow off the lens) and trying to compose the shot. The lake is not frozen, but the reflections and the long exposure give it a frozen appearance.

Many Thanks for your feedback, much appreciated!

I am glad I stopped also.  It was awkward and cold at the time, but the little island was just begging to be photographed : - )

Many Thanks for your positive feedback Holger!

Very gratifying to read that you like it Thank You!

I did get stuck momentarily, but more because of the layer of ice rather than the snow, even my 4 x 4 struggled to climb  a steep incline, but I go there in the end : - )

Compliments Alf! A wonderful image with a great and artistic post production. It seems done in a travel in the world of tales. Bravissimo.

Hi Alf, I'm curious about the technicals of this: ISO 31 and f/22.  My guess is that you used these settings because you didn't have a ND filter with you.  I haven't used ISO 31 (I stick with 64) and I wonder if you notice any big differences between ISO 31 & 64.  Also, are you concerned about diminished optical performance due to diffraction when stopping down beyond f/11?  Regards, Jeff

JEFF.

I can't say I noticed a huge difference between ISO 31 and ISO 64 but chose the former to lengthen the exposure as much as possible.  I did have several ND filters with me, but actually fitting one in the snow storm would have inevitably meant snow or moisture on the lens.  Consequently it was a compromise, I knew choosing  F/22 would mean a certain amount of defraction (which is more obvious on the RAW file)  but better than not getting a shot at all, or risking smears from moisture on the lens.  Hope this satisfies your curiosity : - )

Cheers Jeff!

I am glad you stopped.

The bare green grass and the naked ebony limbs stand out against the silvery snow slopes.

All the best and congrats on a fine image.

Many thanks and good to hear from you!

It was probably the coldest day of the winter (so far) but nowhere as cold as usual in these parts.

I know what you mean, the reflected light gives it that impression.

Strange how a few feet in altitude can make such a difference in temperature, which left the lower slopes with just a dusting of snow.

Many Thanks for your feedback Tony, much appreciated!

With its patch of subtle green, the island hardly appears bleak to me, given the mountains behind it.  Although the image to some may convey alienation, or loneliness, or even foreboding, to me it speaks volumes about the sort of peace and solitude that exists only during winter.

A stunning image, with all of its ducks in a row . . .

My best,

michael

I couldn't agree more, in fact I was just replying to another photographer on here and I mentioned that for me that solitude is one of the main attractions of the winter months.

Not only is the visible aspect more pleasing, but the sounds of nature can be heard, the drips of melting ice, the whispering of a small stream, the call of a distant crow, and all this without being interrupted by the radio's or any of the other human sounds that fill the air and are a constant in summer months.

And yes although I described the island as "bleak" I do so with the thought of that is how it would appear to the majority.

Sincere Thanks for your thoughtful and positive feedback Michael.

Best Regards

I think it is particularly beautiful I agree that the contrast from the colours of the Island compared to the rest of the landscape a lovely - yet it is the rest of the landscape that draws my attention as well. I can relate to what you just expressed re the solitude. For me I think it would be such a beautiful experience - not one of loneliness, but a full gamut of the senses. I'm glad you travelled on this unknown road to see what it had to offer - even more glad that you did not get stuck.  I am anxious to know what this spot would look like in the Spring and Summer, then again, Fall.
