Beautiful work Randy there is so much going on here. The color and tone is rich with outstanding detail. The subjects are well placed in a balanced frame full of movement and complexity. Excellent work.

Warm Regards,

Kelly Way

Your coloring, the direction of the boats and receding haziness of the background particularly the sky all make for a dramatic image.  Congrats, Randy, this is a prize.

For me, the strengths of the photo are:

  • low perspective & close up shot gives me the feeling of being there among the people in the boats
  • good sense of depth in the photo
  • water and boats in the foreground provide shapes and contrasts between light and shadow
  • the colors, lighting and local contrasts model the people and boats in the foreground well

Two things I like less about the photo are:

  • the general "dirty grey" look of the sky and the trees in the background. Perhaps there's a natural explanation but I have the sense that this has something to do with postprocessing
  • (over)saturation of some colors - notably blue- in some of the headscarves

The two women and the child - with something going on with apple - provide a good focal point for (and entry point into) this market scene.

My sense (i.e., guess) is that Randy wanted to guide the viewer's attention to the people in the boats, and he did so by 1) accentuating some of the colors among the clothing, notably blue and green; and 2) decreasing the "visibility" (sharpness, color, contrast) of much of the background (sky, trees). The fact that this manipulation is so readily apparent suggest to me that he may have gone a bit too far on both, but it's also something that doesn't detract much from my enjoyment and appreciation of the photograph. I do like the POV and the details of three people in the two boats closest to the camera, because my mind can easily extrapolate to understand what's happening among all of the people in this entire floating marketplace. I think Randy has effectively communicated a slice of life in this part of Indonesia, and that's a worthy photographic accomplishment.

I would go along with Stephens theory that the idea was to accentuate the foreground with colour and definition in order to concentrate the viewers attention. There is a vibrancy and life about the image that is probably far removed from reality, but I have to say it works for me. I particularly like the arm and oar of the woman that is paddling the way it forms an apex and frames her face. I'm sure that bit wasn't premeditated but again it's a nice touch that works. It gives a romantic kind of impression of the hustle bustle of harbour life that I like. Stark reality isn't always what we crave to see.
Best Regards
Alf

This captures a nice living moment. Many compositional and narrative elements align nicely. Handled differently, it has potential. It doesn't work for me as presented. The color is out of place and not integrated with the atmosphere. It has a cheap feel, like paintings I see for sale at the wharf. The color is impossibly bright and not aligned with the conditions and context, so it rings false. I see some some really sweet and genuine expressions which the overall treatment hides and seems to work against.
