cxc
The accompanying scan shows two portions of my first negative developed in a Unicolor drum. The left image looks scratched horizontally, the long dimension of the drum, and the right has a vertical mark that looks more like a light leak. However, I believe the problems were more likely caused during development (I know cameras, I don't know drums). Can anyone help me identify the problems? Film is Bergger, developer is Ilford, drum is 16x20, generously filled. TIA.<div></div>
__jon__
4x5 correct? I didn't know you could do sheet film in the larger print drum. The drum I use for 4x5 is an 8x10 print drum, like this: http://www.largeformatphotography.info/unicolor/ I've never scratched a neg in my drums yet, maybe your film is moving around? Do you have some sort of separator? Here is an image of the original.<div></div>
__jon__
Another question: How many sheets of film were you processing at one time?
ronald_moravec1
I have never done film in a Unicolor drum, but I used to do prints. Don`t slide the film inside the drum either putting it in or removing it. Kind of roll it to the inside and pop it in place. Do one sheet in a tray to be sure the film is ok. You can also scratch the back removing or installing in a holder by allowing it rub against the holer flap. I suspect this is the problem. Examine your whole process to see where the back side can be abraded by sliding.
dan_danilowicz
I've been processing large and small format negs in Unicolor drums for over 25 years and I've never seen anything THAT scratched come out! Looks like gravel in the film holders to me!
dan_danilowicz
I thunk another thought: Does your agitating base change direction every rotation like Unicolor's? I wonder if those are scratches or processing streaks. I remember reading that rollers that just run in one direction (Beseler's?) can make streaky negs.
