id 11 1:3 / vs rodinal 1:50 have the same acutance?

Recommended Posts

Diluting a developer like ID-11/D-76, etc., probably isn't the best way to improve acutance. If you want that effect you're probably better off using an acutance developer such as Rodinal, Tetenal Neofin Blau or Rot, etc. Paterson Acutol has its fans as well.

As for examples, those are difficult to appreciate in small online jpegs. You'd really need to see an original print.

A photo taken with a shaky camera or slightly off focus will destroy most of the dev's acutance effects; good optics (camera and enlarger) helps a lot, also.

Just to be a dissenting voice, vit C devs (Xtol and clones) have good acutance when dilluted (better than, for instance, HC-110 at any dillution, equivalent to FX-37)

And for 35mm users, grain is very much under control (what is not true with Rodinal, FX-1 and FX-37)
