robert_macdonald
Hi, The newspaper where I am interning has switced to digital photography, and no longer use their darkroom. They said I could take whatever I want for free, I took a three reel Paterson tank, a bag of D-76 developer and a big jug of rapid fixer, my question is,without hypocheck how will I know when my fixer is exhausted? I mean I don't want to risk contaminatiing my whole supply.Oh and also what is the purpose of Rapid Fixer solution B? Thanks Robert MacDonald
joey
how will I know when my fixer is exhausted?

Snip off an exposed piece of film, like the leader. Put it in a cup of fixer, and measure how long it takes to completely clear. Continue to do this for every roll of film that you process. When the time needed to clear the film is double the original value, it's time to replace the fixer.

Oh and also what is the purpose of Rapid Fixer solution B?

It's a hardener. You don't need it for paper, although it can help protect film. I never use it.
