larry_korhank
I want to remotely trip the shutter of an older Canon AE1 from about 100 ft. Is there an inexpensive way of doing this? I've seen adds in hunting catalogs for clamp on devices that trip the shutter when the animal breaks a infrared beam, but I want to decide when to trip the shutter. Thanks for your help! bobatkins
No, there is no inexpensive way. You could build your own, but if you knew how to do that, you wouldn't be asking the question! It still probably wouldn't be all that cheap. <p> You can get fairly long remote releases which work on a pneumatic principle. You squeeze the bulb and air pressure depresses the release. I think I've seen them advertized to work at 30ft, but 100ft might be a bit much. Not sure where you'd get one, but Porters (a web search should dig them up) tend to carry oddball stuff like that. gordon_tozer
Larry, If you have a motor drive on your Canon with a cable release outlet socket . Then I will refer you to an answer I sent to Bill Horn May10th 98 on his question about a remote cable release . If you are interested let me know . ellis_vener_photography
I use the LPA Pocket Wizard and/or the Quantum Radio Slave IVi. this would work for you assuming you have a motor drive and a port on the drive for a remote release. If you don't have a port, a good technician can wire the connections for you.
ederkes
I made an inexpensive remote for my Canon F1n. If the power winder or motor drive connection on your Canon AE1 is like the F1n (a 3/32" submini phone jack), then you're in luck. All you have to do is get a 75-100 ft roll of light gauge (22-24g) audio speaker wire, a 3/32" submini phone plug (Radio shack part #274-289), and push button switch (Radio Shack part # 275-609). Solder the push button switch to one end and the phone plug to the other end of the speaker wire and you're ready to go. You can even lengthen the remote further by interconnecting a second roll of speaker wire with the appropiate phone plug and phone jack connections on each end.
