Rick Helmke
Evening everyone, Is there some kind of software from Adobe or Nikon or somebody else that will open nef files from the D200, 300, 800 and 810? I just want to find one thing that will work on multiple Nikon bodies, not something different for each one. Thanks. Rick H.
Sandy Vongries
Don't know if there is something more current, but Nikon View Nx2 does a fine job back to my D2x. I have half a dozen Digital Nikons ranging up to the Zf.

I did notice that some of the latest formats (HE and HE* in the Z9, Z8 and Zf) are not supported by some of the third-party raw converters or the support is still under development. But once a camera is fully supported, the software makers do not typically drop support in later versions.
bgelfand
If you are running Windows, this link is to the Nikon Codec that will open many different camera files. It has not been updated to the Z8 or Z9, yet. robert_bouknight1
I liked the old capture better, but this should open and allow work on any NEF file, and is free. I have not tried it on anything older than a D3x. https://downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en/download/sw/251.html
Rick Helmke
I downloaded the codec but then found out that current Photoshop will open nef files from the D200, 300, 300s, 800 and 810. Go figure. Rick H.
bgelfand
I am running Photoshop CS5 and Lightroom 6 both of which will open NEF files from the cameras you list. An advantage of the codec pack is that now thumbnails of NEF files will be displayed in File Explorer and Microsoft Photo.
BeBu Lamar
Both the latest version of Adobe Camera Raw and Nikon NX Studio will open all the *.nef files. You have to pay to use the Adobe one. The Nikon one is free.
mike_halliwell
The only 'troublesome' Nikon RAW file type is the NEFX, the file produced by the Z8s Pixel Shift. DxO doesn't support it yet.. 🙁
Rick Helmke
It’s most unlikely that I’ll ever need to open nef files from a Z camera. I don’t see the need for it and the cost to replace everything I would want is insane. Rick H.
hapien
If you happen to wander to opensource software, gthumb is pretty good for viewing images and ufraw to convert to jpeg
