Matt Laur
Note: Consider keeping uploads no larger than 1600 pixels on the long side when it matters, and sticking with 1000 pixels when the image feels no pain at that resolution. On data size/compression, try to keep things under 1mb, shooting for 600kb when you can stop there. Note that this includes photos hosted off-site (at Flickr, Photobucket, your own site, etc). New to this thread? The general guidelines for these Wednesday threads are right here: https://www.photo.net/forums/topic/398109-guidelines-for-nikon-forum-wednesday-image-threads. For now, we're sticking with 1, 2, or 3 images per week as you see fit. Nikon may be retro-ing with their new FX, but I'm only going to retro back to when I was using a D600 (with a 16-35, in this case) for this Nikon Wednesday. Here, I was doing a sunrise business exterior shoot. We were waiting for the sun to come up, and had an Einstein monolight in a parabolic metal reflecting dish out in the parking lot up on a 20' mast to provide fill on the front of the business. That thing threw an amazing amount of light, more than enough to fill the shaded front of the building as the sun came up behind. At the time, Buff's remote control unit - a little primitive compared to current phone-app-based systems now - was a huge asset, in being able to remotely fiddle with the strobe up on that high stand. Some shots really are all about making light that isn't going to be right on its own. Nothing like heading to the site at 3:00AM to prep for one shot for a web site - but that's the glamor of doing commercial work!

bgelfand
Great images, Mike They are what one would expect from a macro lens, not a telephoto. Three questions, please: 1) How close to the subjects were you? 2) What focal length did you set on the lens? 3) How cropped are the images?
mike_halliwell
'Headshot' is min focus of 0.96m. Common Darters are quite approachable as-long-as you do it slowly. In this case it was perched on a boardwalk handrail, and i slowly slid the lens hood on the top surface until the lens (set on MF min), popped into focus, and took the shot. 'In-Flight' is ~2.11m. Dragons in flight is a game for Masochists...........🤣 Both @ 560mm. (400mm + ZTC 1.4) The native Z100-400mm max repro is 1:2.6, so with the ZTC1.4 added is ~ 1:1.85 (i think!)
