m-db
Can some explain how this might apply to current model upgrades and or new product time frames? https://ymcinema.com/2023/01/02/nikon-patents-a-new-image-sensor/ All the best
ShunCheung
Please keep in mind that a lot of companies file plenty of patents. Most of those do not lead to actual products. For example, several years ago, Nikon filed patents for three different f5.6 PF lenses: 400mm, 500mm, and 600mm. Eventually they introduced a 500mm/f5.6 PF in the F-mount in 2018, but so far there hasn't been any 400/5.6 PF or 600/5.6 PF. Last year they introduced a 400mm/f4.5 in the Z mount, but that is not a PF lens. At least I have no idea what this sensor patent is about. bob_flood1
Companies also take out "preemptive" patents. Nikon's patents for 400 and 600 mm PF lenses may be their move to prevent a competitor from patenting such lenses. This new patent may be the result of research into a new sensor that turned out to not have a current application, but Nikon sees an opportunity for it in the future. Companies patent new ideas for a wide variety of reasons, and many are not related to plans for a new product in the near future.
bgelfand
Nikon has has other divisions than the consumer camera division. This sensor might be for one of its industrial or measurement products. A sensor capable of good resolution at a high frame rate would make a very good sensor for sorting or product inspection on a high speed automated assembly line. Photographers or Video may never see it in a consumer product.
