I'd guess it was from a known bad batch of unfixable, duff cameras.

 

For $400, i suppose it was a small P&S?

Nikon Canada is a different entity and will only service Canadian market Nikon cameras and lenses. They won't touch my US bought D750- I would have to send it to Nikon USA at my expense (including Customs charges) for servicing. Canada and the US are side by side neighbors but Nikon Canada and Nikon USA will only service the gear bought in their home markets. Strange but true.

Unfortunately, this seems to be a common thing in the photography industry. Canon, Sony, and Tamron, to name a few, all have similar grey market policies.
