stephen_komp
Hi Everyone - I have owned the same Nikon F3 for years and never had a problem. The other day it started doing something really strange. Whenever I cock the shutter, it fires (without me pressing the button) immediately. I have never had this happen with any camera and I can't figure out what is going on. Has this ever happened to anyone else? I hope it's just something I'm doing wrong. Thanks in advance - Steve
mike_halliwell
Is there any 'feeling' in the shutter button before cocking?
stephen_komp
Is there any 'feeling' in the shutter button before cocking? It kind of feels the way it always has. There is definitely tension.
mike_halliwell
If you set the self timer, is there the requested delay before it self trips?
erichsande
My response is a bit of a shot in the dark, but maybe try using the mechanical release a few times. I had an F3 for awhile but didn't use it much; I also have an FE2 and sometimes used to hear that using its M250 mode would clear problems. Brian1664876441
It sounds like the mechanical latch that is used to keep the shutter in place is stuck. It sounds like the camera needs a Clean-Lube-Adjust (CLA). I have had this happen to cameras before.
BeBu Lamar
Try this. Remove the batteries and cock the shutter and see if it fires? If it doesn't release the shutter via the mechanical release. If it works like that I think the shutter release button stick and makes contact all the time. One more thing. With the batteries, do not press the shutter release and see if you see the display in the viewfinder is on. If it's on then the shutter release button acts like it's being pushed down all the time. Even if the shutter release button isn't stuck the contact underneath it may be stick on. Edited August 22, 2020 by BeBu Lamar
CvhKaar
Inside the shutter cock/film wind assemplyn, there is a plunge for remote wire release, this can get sticky by years of build-up from sweat dust and other stuff, if that one gets to sticky, it will sometimes stay "down" / get stuck, meaning the shutter will release whenever cocked. So yo could check if that part of your camera needs cleaning, sometimes a bit of dry pressures air (carefull with pressured air, it can bet damp in some low quality cans) will release that plunger, or sometimes a wire release wil also free it.. rodeo_joe1
You might also want to check that the auxilliary 'fire' button in the camera base, as used by a motor drive, hasn't got stuck.
