Mike Gammill
Another informative and enjoyable look back. Thanks. The differences among slide films of the day was interesting. In later years when I began taking photos I sometimes tried a new film based on comparison tests.
Julio Fernandez
Thanks for this series. Marc. This is another vintage month. Keppler makes some timeless points about craftsmen, automation and technology evolution. CdS cells were coming in (along with mercury cells). Sony had introduced a portable video recorder, weight only 145 lbs; guess it moved on wheels. Compensating developers are analized. The handwritten letter from HCB alone would justify the issue. Looking at the long, narrow format, for a minute I feared that he had written it in toilet paper.
rick_drawbridge
Thanks, Marc, for a series of posts I've finally got around to reading. I seem to have less and less time for sitting, reading the articles that interest me ! Your work is much appreciated.
JDMvW
The high point for me is always Burt Keppler's column. He was one of the few who had some influence, I think, on the Japanese OEMs. And he certainly wrote the book on SLRs :) 1962-03 Modern Photography
marc_bergman1
Mike - I used to closely examine these slide film tests. I generally would stick with Kodachrome II and High Speed Ektachrome. I now do wish I had tried some others if only for fun. Julio - Once Keppler got something on his mind it was hard to sway his opinion. he period between 1962 and around 1968 showed a great deal of innovation using the CdS cell. They put them on the outside of the camera. They put them behind the mirror, or under the mirror, or at the front of the prism, or by the eyepiece. No one could agree. Rick - I know what you mean. I am trying to set up a better schedule just to get these done. I want to spend the next two weeks on my website. I am still in the design phase. I currently have over 11,000 pages of material scanned and ready to link. JDM - I don't have that Keppler book yet. I do have his "The Pentax Way" book which is very thorough. There seems to be a connection between Modern Photography magazine and Asahi Camera magazine. Modern has re-published some of Asahi's material. I have also seen some mention of Japanese manufacturer's representatives visiting their office.
