Colin O
I'm not familiar with the Rainbowimaging adapter, but if it is labelled MD/MC to NEX, then it must be for adapting manual-focus Minolta lenses, which the Maxxum lens is not - it's an autofocus lens.

You need Sony's own LA-EA2 adapter, or the older LA-EA1. The disadvantage of the LA-EA1 is that it can only be used in manual focus mode I believe. (Its advantage is that it's cheaper.)

http://www.sonydigitalimaging.com/lenses/e-mount/LA-EA2.html
http://www.sonydigitalimaging.com/lenses/e-mount/LA-EA1.html
Colin O
I just searched B&H and there are a couple of other (cheaper) suitable adapters:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ns=p_PRICE_2|0&ci=3420&N=4077634486+4286736323+4289371046&srtclk=sort
Note that for your situation, the options selected on the left-hand side are Camera Fitting (Male): Sony E-mount (NEX), and Lens Fitting (Female): Sony A-mount /Minolta Maxxum.
carbon_dragon
I've had good luck with cheaper adapters on my NEX-7 but I'll second the LA-EA2. It's a great little piece of equipment. I use it with the Sony Zeiss 16-80.
andylynn
The LA-EA1 allows AF but the LA-EA2 improves it.

Larry, your options here are the Sony adapters, which are more than $100, or a 3rd party adapter without electronics. The disadvantages of the 3rd party adapters are that you don't have autofocus, and aperture control is awkward because you adjust it with a ring on the adapter and it doesn't seem like anybody who makes a cheap adapter has implemented this ring very well, so you're never sure what your aperture is set to.

IIRC this lens is almost the same as the Minolta MD 50mm f/1.7 manual focus lens, only with the changes needed to make it an autofocus lens. The MD is a heck of a good lens, and the most you could ever pay for one is about $30. It's a better lens to use with mirrorless on an adapter, because it has a better focus ring and an aperture ring on the lens.

My recommendation would be to either get a Sony adapter if you want to use the lens with autofocus, or pick up the MD lens off eBay or Keh and a 3rd party MC/MD to NEX adapter from eBay or Amazon. The second solution would require manual focus and exposure would work in A or M modes only but it's very inexpensive. Forget 3rd party Maxxum to NEX adapters.
