Hi Folks.

Last week the family took a long weekend trip to NYC. So I have some a-typical (for me) images today. I only took my K7 and 18-55, but still got some nice photos.
The first was in the Natural History Museum. I was really surprised how dark they kept it! I don't think I've ever been in a museum so dimly lit. Anyway, the K7 is not a stellar dark camera body (I used ASA 800) and the 18-55 is at best a slow lens. Still with a little help from photoshop I got a few decent images in the museum without having o resort to the flash.
Next was the iconic, "Every visitor to NYC" needs to get. A seagull added a "little" more to the image:

Finally, again an image that I took without a tripod, limited ISO, of the 'new' Freedom tower with the "Survivor Tree" in front of it. The Survivor tree was at the base of the South Tower when it came, was damaged, but somehow pulled through. There was also a memorial in the heart of the tree (not in this image) to Belgium. It was a rather emotional night for me remembering everything. Last time I (I would guess t was 1999) was there I was on the observation deck on the Tower. So a lot to remember.
We also went to B&H. They didn't have the K-1 out (rat s) but I did get to try the new 70-200 f2.8. My daughter wanted us to go back to Dylan's!

Shooting at the coast is always tough for me. I'm not particularly motivated. In fact, I only took my camera out two days on this 10 day trip.

#2 Skiing in B&W

Picture was shot with Sony HDR-AS100VR mounted on my younger boy helmet reversed skiing in front of me filming the old man going downhill. It would be my life time dream to meet Matt some day and go skiing and shooting together ...

It was my 2nd week with Silver Efex Pro in Google Nik Collection. I forgot the film simulation that I used, I like to think of Fuji Acros 100 which I remember is Justin's favorite and it is certainly my favorite. But I have no idea if I actually pick that or a 400 film such as Kodak BW400CN or the TriX 400. I simply forgot which one I have actually used. If you have not tried the now free software, please visit https://www.google.com/nikcollection/ which I highly recommend especially fpr those LR users as the menu in Photo -> Edit In has a new life with an creative aid that can add unique tone to digitalprocessing. The Color Efex Pro 4 is just as amazing. But I am a b&w film lover and this tool gets high praises from Hin.

Nice photos this week! Hin, I'd love to show you around CB sometime, and they have direct LA flights during ski season now!
Our lift served ski season ended yesterday but mine ended Saturday as I had to work yesterday. I hope to get out in the backcountry a few more times before I'm done, maybe even a day at Silverton.
On closing weekend they do some fun activities and the pond skim is a spectator favorite. Costumed competitors try to make it across the pond, or get the biggest crowd response through costumes, jumps, and all around silly antics.
Maybe 1/3 make it across.
.
My son is learning the art of blacksmithing from a friend of the family. They made their own forge that is powered by hardwood charcoal and a hair dryer to feed it lots of oxygen. I got out my Helios 44-2 to try some swirly bokeh with the swirly sparks.
Nice evening walk by the lake last night. Ice is starting to break up and I'm hoping to catch it when it makes more interesting patterns as the pieces separate from each other.

Hin,

Yep, Acros is my favorite film emulsion in B&W, you can do a lot with it depending on pushing and processing time. It does quite well at higher ISO when pushed.

Nice work with the skiing shots, I was thinking of mounting two small cameras to my climbing helmet to get a dual perspective, but I can barely stand the weight of one camera!

MattB,

Is there any Pentax or Pentax mount gear you don't own? Nice images and showcase of your vast array of equipment! Love to see both. The blacksmith one definitely caught my eye.

Doug,

That Lady liberty photo is great with the seagull, but you need to correct that off center angle on the pedestal, it's driving me nuts!

Ha, yeah I guess I do have a big collection of gear. I have the rest of the family outfitted with old bodies too.
I don't have a 645Z but my birthday is coming up... ;)
Those three bodies are my current "quiver" with the consumer (KS-2) for always having with me and traveling light since it is plastic but it is also sealed for adventures. Then the K-3 is for event and other "pro" work when I can have a little bigger and more stable body, especially with the grip for bigger lenses and/or a flash mounted. The 645D (or film 645 but more often the D) is for planned landscape or studio where I don't have to lug it too far and I want top quality. So at least they aren't collecting dust!

Justin & Matt, you two and many other Pentaxians such as Kerrick James are the sole reasons that I stay with Pentax. Please keep sharing your work and enthusiasm as each of you has a big admirer of your work, ethics and wonderful hobby besides photography in mountain vision and outdoor skiing and biking.

@Matt, I am very jealous with the work you have done with 645D and K-3 and now if you are hinting the 645Z, I am NOT going to comment further -- I am bumped, very happy for you, but a bit of jealousy kicking in naturally.
