stephen_moon1
I have Canon FD 50mm 1.4 lens and I bought a filter for it - a polarizing filter. I read that it needed to be 52mm and I found one of that size that was made by canon. The problem is that there is no way to attach it, as I see it. Both the 50mm lens and 52mm filter have threads on the inner lip, it just lays inside the lens with no way to attach. Did I buy the wrong one, or is there supposed to be an adapter to make them connect? Thanks for the help!
yockenwaithe
If there isn't a female screw adapter for the filters, there may not be one. Or you may have to twist the end off of the lens to expose the threads [this was the case with one of my lenses], as some have a built in filter with no additional threads on it
david_carroll4
Do you have an all-black "bayonet-mount"* lens or a breech-lock version with a silver lock ring to attach it to the body? Both are technically "FD"s, but the bayonet mount uses a 52mm filter, while the breech-lock version uses a 55mm filter. I suspect that you have the earlier 55mm version.
*technically also a breech-lock, but operates like a bayonet mount, in hat you twist the whole lens, rather than just the ring
rick_janes
The New FD 50 1.4 had 52mm filter threads, the earlier FD models were 55mm.

Lou_Meluso
Yes, you got the wrong size. You need 55mm filters for that lens.
steven_clark
And at some point you stand a good chance of having one of the other lenses, so you might want a 52-55mm step-up ring so you can use one size of filter for the less common stuff.

walter_degroot
Inotie small bumps on yjhre front of some fd lenses.

I was told that this was for a canon brand lens shade.
I was frustrated trying to specify such a shade.
instead bought threaded shades.
( former owner added a skylight filter so the camera had a shiny reflecting front edge!

anyway to search/speify this shade
is there any way to mount filters on this type of shade
dave_s
Walter, some (not all) threaded lens shades have a female thread on the front of the shade. Alternatively, you can screw the threaded shade into the front thread of the filter.
awahlster
The Canon Bayonet shades attach to the outside of the lens barrel and you can use the filter threads as normal. Granted with a polarizing filter its a huge pain because you can't reach the adjustment ring with the hood on.
