A good new Nikon Wednesday to everyone. And hopefully for most of you, a happy, low-pollen-in-your-nose spring. Here, lots of blooming things ... but these apple trees are just now waking up. One of our favorite orchards grows several varieties, and these middle-aged trees will in bloom in a few days. For now, just some buds beginning to open. Stamens, I think. Got fruit? Share!

00dEjZ-556298784.jpg.8164107c46b5105d46d27c1772226010.jpg

How 'bout fruits of my labors? I took advantage of a recent mpix discount to print some 8x10s on 11x14 paper, with borders, on single play mounting board. The concept is to make the prints as easy as possible to frame in readymade window mat/frame kits. These turned out well so I'll probably use these for gifts or sales. While there's a big price hike between 8x10 and 11x14 (hint: wait for mpix discounts on large prints and/or shipping), this method of using only part of the paper with large borders saves effort and possibly money in the long run by making it easier to frame prints on economical 11x14 frames with 8x10 cutouts.

The top photo, of the cirsium thistles, was on color paper to preserve the toning effect. It was taken with the Nikon V1 and 10-30 VR last year. The bottom photo was of red carnations from a few weeks ago, taken with infrared filters on the D2H and 55/3.5 Micro-Nikkor, converted to IR monochrome in Lightroom, and printed on the b&w RC paper mpix uses (not sure whether it's Ilford or Fuji).
These are both framed with simple clip-on frames and displayed in my living room at the moment. Both the 10 mp V1 and 4 meagerpickle D2H files could easily stand up to larger prints for these types of photos. Infrared photos tend to be somewhat soft anyway and the 4 mp D2H photos could handle up to 16x20 for some IR photos.
