royall_berndt
They've been sputtering; now they are down. Is this the end? What's wrong?

lex_jenkins
The thread Anders linked covers all of the publicly available information. My personal observation is that scaling the site and adapting to the social media era were the main challenges. PhotoSig's primary mission was overtaken by sites like 500px and 1x. bobatkins
If you really want to know, WHOIS is your friend:

Photosig.com
Registrant Name: Willis Boyce
Registrant Organization: SIG Networks Corporation
Registrant Street: PO Box 1409, Gracie Station
Registrant City: New York
Registrant State/Province: NY
Registrant Postal Code: 10128
Registrant Country: US
Registrant Phone: +1.9177799047
Registrant Phone Ext:
Registrant Fax: +1.9177799545
Registrant Fax Ext:
Registrant Email: @signetworks.com

It's hard to make money these days from a photo website, and that's the primary goal of most websites (including Photsig). Lots and lots and lots of well financed competition with new ideas combined with a falling market for sales of cameras and lenses. It can done but it needs lots of sustained effort, and that effort has to be focused in exactly the right direction by the right person - or you're wasting your time. Much like the Red Queen said:

"Well, in our country," said Alice, still panting a little, "you'd generally get to somewhere else—if you run very fast for a long time, as we've been doing."
"A slow sort of country!" said the Queen. "Now, here, you see, it takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place. If you want to get somewhere else, you must run at least twice as fast as that!"

See also http://photosig.org/ and http://sigbuster.wordpress.com/2007/11/12/hello-world/
stevetheoldman
Photosig used to be a great site to learn how to critique. The site needs (needed?) a real overhaul to the interface, including a mobile component. Photosig was also nortoriously unstable (as well as a few of the people who used to run the show.) I think it's gone for good this time...just an opinion.
