Dave410 Posted July 17, 2014 Share Posted July 17, 2014
I haven’t shot much in the last week, but I’ve been scanning a few old Kodachrome slides and here are a couple of samples. They turned out okay, I suppose, considering they’ve been sitting in a carousel in the closet for the last 40 years. The hard part was getting the dust and dirt off them since IR cleaning doesn’t work on Kodachrome.

Many (many!) years ago I took a nuclear engineering course while a student at UC Berkeley. Few people knew about it, but we had a small research reactor on campus and one afternoon we took a tour. I understand the reactor has since been shut down.

Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Dave410 Posted July 17, 2014 Share Posted July 17, 2014
Here’s a photo of the reactor core submerged in a pool of water. That blue glow is Cerenkov radiation which is caused by electrons leaving the core going faster than the speed of light in water. As Einstein taught us, the speed of light in a vacuum is a constant, but it can be slower in other mediums. In this case, the electrons enter the water from the core going faster than the speed of light in water, so they have to slow down. They emit Cerenkov radiation to dissipate energy as they slow.

Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

pjmeade Posted July 17, 2014 Share Posted July 17, 2014
I am the photographer for Tidworth Polo Club and for the British Army Polo Team and last weekend I was fortunate enough to photograph this year's the Rundle Cup, the annual match between the Army and the Royal Navy. This year's match featured Captain Harry Wales, the younger son of the Prince of Wales playing for the victorious Army team.

Prince Harry in Action
7D+100-400
<a title="Hackett Rundle Cup 2014 by Pete Meade, on Flickr" href=" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5521/14464828218_2190254a6e_c.jpg" alt="Hackett Rundle Cup 2014" width="800" height="533" />
The Hackett Army Polo Team
5D2+24-105
<a title="Hackett Rundle Cup 2014 by Pete Meade, on Flickr" href=" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3872/14648193231_cd3e82189a_c.jpg" alt="Hackett Rundle Cup 2014" width="800" height="533" />
Prince Harry and injured ex servicemen involved in the Invictus Games
5D2+24-104
<a title="Prince Harry and friends by Pete Meade, on Flickr" href=" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3918/14648192971_d65213cde9_c.jpg" alt="Prince Harry and friends" width="800" height="533" />
Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
