jonathan_parkhouse1
This odd looking creature is a Vapourer Moth caterpillar (Orgyia antiqua), in the garden yesterday. No idea where the name came from.

paul_de_ley
Jonathan here's Ian Rutherford's guess that vapourer refers to the ability of the newly hatched caterpillars to "evapourate" (his word) by taking to the air on silk threads. It is an interesting name - and quite different from the entirely unofficial caterpillar's name I remember from childhood, which translates in english as a choo choo train!

sgust
Found this nightjar while checking a fence, luckily I had my camera on me. These birds are normally near invisible during the day, but this one started doing short little erratic flights when I approached. I'm guessing there was a nest somewhere nearby.

A Rufous Nightjar (Caprimulgus rufus)

Glenn McCreery
I think that what is pictured are the burrows of beach hoppers, a marine amphipod, around a kelp frond on a beach at Santa Barbara. I did not dig to find out. The tide was receding from high on the near full-moon morning of June 10. Does anyone know better?
