Photo sharing websites and host providers

Recommended Posts

My website is hosted by: http://eboundhost.com/
IMHO they have outstanding customer service. Highly recommended.
My site is simple html with photo galleries generated using jAlbum.

My domains are all at: http://register4less.com/
I had one domain at register.com and they did OK, but they sent a lot of spam and were very recalcitrant about transferring the domain.

I used Shutterfly a couple of years ago for print sales/fulfillment for an event and they did OK.
These days I just handle print sales via e-mail and have them drop-shipped by http://www.whcc.com/

I use Softpress Freeway Pro for web design because it is quite a capable program, but you don't need to know html. Still if you want you can add html if you choose. My galleries are generated through lightroom, but someday I may consider portfolios through Juice Box. A number of years back I bought a life time of hosting through A Small Orange for only $150.00. However, I've seen a number of photographers design beautiful sites using Wordpress.

JDM
The why?
Because without hearing the why, the responses are not always helpful.
Perhaps someone is interested to set up or move their own website and needs concrete information from members here who already have a site, which works for them very well, have gone through the process and can share their experience? That was the purpose of this post, I hope I clarified it a bit.
I will try to be less "cryptic" and more precise if I can in my next post.
So far the responses in this thread are very helpful.

It's quite surprising to me that someone would both reply to two posts from the same person only to ask why they're asking a question.

That said, I am curious: I follow your question about sharing sites but hosting providers is a little less clear to me. I enjoy Flickr for the overall experience and the significant sense of community, If you have a niche, you can readily find kindred spirits at Flickr. Accessing and organizing images is straightforward but I still think a companion program like http://www.flickeryapp.com/ makes things easier, but only if you use the Mac os.

For general hosting I've not found any company that's better than http://www.dreamhost.com/

Paul, I personally don't know the reason why the poster you are referring to answered with a question, it doesn't make a difference to me.
I am following a similar thread on Linkedin where someone who is in the same position I am, is trying to gather information and learn from the experiences of others who have their own established websites, and or are sharing their work online, or do both and redirect traffic from the sharing sites to their own website.
I do currently have personal site, but the host selection I made was not appropriate for the intended function which is DEALING WITH IMAGES (PHOTOS), photography etc. It is extremely limited in the choices of design, and is pretty much useless to me. Unfortunately, the limitations were not evident from their advertising page, you only find out when you actually build the site. I need to move my website to a different host. A host who caters to photographers.
In the above mentioned thread on Linkedin, the name ZENFOLIO came up quite a bit mentioned by users as being a good platform for photographers. In this thread I think it came up once, as being a good site catering to photographers.
You have mentioned DreamHost.
So now I have at least something to go by and research basing myself on recommendations and the experience of others.
